You can read the story about Brian Urlacher considering free agency, but I think that’s just a story–just something to raise the price for the Bears a little bit. Why would Brian Urlahcer go anywhere other than the Bears? I mean, yeah, Peyton Manning left Indy, but he was severely hurt. Brian Urlacher is just old and near the end of his career. When that’s all there is, you have to assume that he’s just trying to earn a little bit more money.
That’s all this is. If you’re a Bears fan, I don’t think you really need to worry. Plus, Brian Urlacher is not the best player on your team anymore. He might be your emotional leader, but he is not the end all be all of your team. If he were, this story probably never would have made it to print. The Bears would have gotten something done and avoided any kind of seemingly negative press.
So, let’s just assume that Brian Urlacher is going to stay in Chicago. Does that mean that the Bears are still contenders, or are they even a defensively-focused team anymore? In my opinion, they are not. They are a team that needs to stay focused on their offense. Sure, they can’t give up points left and right, but they can manage without a monster defense because they can score points in bunches.
So, let’s not make too much of this story about Brian Urlahcer. Yeah, we want to see him in a Bears uniform because that’s just something that makes sense, but it’s not the biggest deal in the world. He’s positioning himself to get more money, and he needs to make sure that the Bears will commit to him through the end of his career. I can’t blame him for that. You stay in one place long enough–you don’t want to leave.
