Toby Gerhart Might Have A New Obstacle

2010 NFL DraftSome people have said that Big Ben has the “complexion for the protection”–actually I think that’s Paul Mooney, but Negrodamus is another story–and now I think some people suspect that Toby Gerhart has the “complexion to not go in the 1st Round at Running Back”.

Yep, Toby’s white and apparently some people think he won’t go high in the draft–as he should–because he’s white.  Well, I can see how there might be a bias against white Running Backs just like there used to be one against Black Quarterbacks.

When was the last time you saw a white feature running back who had Hall of Fame potential?  Anybody?  Anybody?

John Riggins.  too bad he played for the Redskins in the 80’s and he’s ALREADY in the Hall of Fame.  So, we’ve seen the position move away frm white guys.  Ok.

Does that make it a racial thing?

I don’t think it’s a racial thing–it’s just a wrong perception thing.  I had this idiot teacher who used to tell us–alot–that perception is reality.  That’s B.S. and he knew it.  That’s why these players have to go to the combine and pro day and all that other crap just to get drafted.

Perception on tape is not reality.

However, there is still the perception AMONGST some scouts–it seems–that white RBs won’t work in the NFL.  Well, I can see how that would be since the last time we had a good one was the 80’s and that dude is in the Hall of Fame.

In fact, if the scouts are my age they barely remember John Riggins.  So, the only thing that Toby can do is be himself.  He’s probably at the beginning of a new trend where we’ll see white Running Backs all over the place–he’s just the first in a new renaissance.

I think he can live with that.
