The Peyton Manning derby continued into its second week with little sign of a decision being forthcoming. It’s almost like the hokey pokey, teams get in, teams get out, Manning flies himself all about.
After meeting with the Dolphins, Titans, Cardinals and Broncos early in the derby process, the Broncos forced the hand of two other teams when the Broncos put out exactly how much they were offering or alleged to be offering Peyton for his services. That figure, said to be around 50 million for 5 years, eliminated the Dolphins and Cardinals from contention. That left the Titans and Broncos. But wait, there’s more.
This week a new contender emerged in the form of the 49ers. Peyton is now going to work out for them as well. Word has since come out that current 49ers QB Alex Smith has paid a visit to the Dolphins. Coincidence? Perhaps not. Also in the mix Brady Quinn, the backup for Tim Tebow in Denver has signed a contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. That leaves the Broncos down a QB and the 49ers possibly losing one as well.
For Manning, it’s a choosers market. Manning will be able to command just about anything he wants if he keeps showing he’s comfortable and able to throw well. It will come down to a matter of where the Manning family wants to live. Since the Broncos have thrown out the 50 million number that seems to be the working premise for any team interested in signing him.
No matter what team signs Manning, it still remains to be seen how he plays after he starts taking hits. Until that happens, no one can know how Peyton is going to perform over time. It could turn out to be the best thing a team has ever done or the absolute worst. It’s a huge gamble.
I look for Peyton to make a decision soon, as long as there aren’t any other teams that decide to jump in the mix. So come on, let’s all do the hokey pokey at the Manning derby…you put your Titans in, you take your Dolphins out, you put your Broncos in and you shake them all about….
