Payton has coached the Saints since 2006 and in recent days has been linked with the San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants who are both in the market for a new head coach.
But on Wednesday Payton said that he was remaining as head coach of the Saints:
“This is where I plan on coaching, and I don’t envision myself coaching for any other club,” Payton said.
“I know it appeared there was a looming decision, but I think this is really me saying, again, ‘Here I am and nothing’s changed, and I plan on finishing my career here,Payton added.
“I’ll be here as long as they’ll have me.”
Monday, while in negotiations with coach Chuck Pagano on a contract extension, the Colts reportedly contacted Payton in hopes of luring him to Indianapolis.
“Honestly, there’s more moments, more wins, more playoffs, I promise you there will (be). This will be the same formula we applied when we first got here.
Ten years in, I’m in better shape. I feel like the energy, spending time at this task there’s a lot of work to be done.
“I’m not going anywhere.”
Payton is 87-57 in nine years as the Saints’ head coach and is 6-4 all-time in the Playoffs, including Super Bowl XLIV in 2009. He has two years remaining on his contract with the Saints.
What do you think Saints fans. Are you happy that Payton is returning for at least one more season?
