On this week’s edition of Thursday Night Football, we have the Philadelphia Eagles vs the Houston Texans. Michael Vick takes the run and gun show up against the Texans, who badly need a win.
The Eagles are now 7-4 tied atop their division with the New York Giants. For the last 5 games, the Eagles are 3-2. Michael Vick has evolved from a pure running QB into one who can run and stay in the pocket and find the open man down the field. Where before his first instinct was to run at the first sign of pressure, he is now beginning to develop the ability to stand and seek out the open man. The Eagles offensive line is really stepping it up and giving Vick the protection he needs to stand and look. Yes, he still runs and yes, other teams have to plan for that possibility, but more and more he is balancing the two. It makes it that much more difficult for teams to plan for what the Eagles might do.
As for the Texans, they are now 5-6 and they are 1-4 over their last 5 games. They have slipped to 3rd in their division. Arian Foster and Andre Johnson continue to put up big numbers for the Texans, but last week it was Johnson’s uppercut that got all the attention. Glover Quin is on an interception hot streak with 3 in the Texans last game. If Asante Samuel is unable to go for the Eagles, Johnson could have a very big night. Texans QB Matt Schaub is not afraid to air it out and has almost 3000 yards and 15 TDs on the season.
The game could come down to a shoot out between Vick and Schaub and that could mean big numbers between the two. The Texans need this one to try and climb back up the standings and the Eagles need to win it to stay ahead of the Giants. It could definitely be a run and gun kind of game.
