It’s been a week of waiting and hoping for the Miami Dolphins and St. Louis Rams. A week of apprehension and uncertainty. But at the end of the day, the St. Louis Rams have won the Jeff Fisher sweepstakes.
Fisher has decided after thinking, gauging and going back and forth the Rams are the team for him to continue his coaching career. But the decision didn’t come with a fully fledged “YES!” You see, Fisher vacillated on which job to take, right up until the last day.
It appears Fisher had decided Thursday the Dolphins job was the one he wanted. Only his decision came with one demand. A demand it turned out the Dolphins owner Steven Ross didn’t want to comply with. Fisher wanted organizational control, meaning he wanted power over current General Manager Jeff Ireland.
Ross balked at that idea, opting instead to continue the search for a new coach. This left Fisher with only one alternative. The Rams.
Friday Fisher found out the Rams organization was on their way to California to interview an unidentified candidate for the head coaching position. Fisher made a text, followed by a phone call, accepting the Rams job.
Fisher was considered the top prize in this winter’s coaching-search sweepstakes, at least of those coaches willing to come back to the field. He guided the Tennessee and Houston franchises for 17 years and helped Tennessee come within a yard of winning the 2000 Super Bowl, ironically enough against the Rams.
Fisher stepped down a year ago amid the Vince Young fiasco. Young was released from the team and pitted the Fisher against ownership. Fisher was the league’s longest-tenured coach and left the Titans saying he needed a break.
It is believed St. Louis has more talented core players than Miami, and that might have added to the allure of the Rams over the Dolphins. The Rams have quarterback Sam Bradford. The Rams also have the second pick in April’s NFL Draft, which they can use to take Oklahoma State’s Justin Blackmon. That would give Bradford someone to throw the ball to.
St. Louis also has Steven Jackson. One of the top running backs in the NFL. Now Fisher needs to worry about the line and the defensive secondary.
Many don’t know this but Fisher will be making his second stint with the Rams. In 1991 he served as the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams. Now he returns as head coach.
