Penn State linebacker Michael Mauti has been named to the Watch List for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, presented to the nation’s top defensive player.
The Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and the Charlotte Touchdown Club have awarded the Nagurski Trophy annually since 1993.
A redshirt junior this fall, Mauti is one of seven returning starters on defense. Despite missing all or parts of four games last year with injuries, he finished fifth on the team with 67 tackles. He started seven games last year, recording 51⁄2 tackles for loss and two sacks.
If Mauti can stay healthy all season (a big if) then he should be able to put up the kind of numbers that linebackers need in order to win the Nagurski Trophy.
