How long will Tim Tebow be number two on the depth chart? Not forever.
The problem with this situation is that Kyle Orton is outplaying Tebow, but Tebow is the number one pick. The Broncos haven’t gone out of their way to say that Tebow has to earn anything, and that tells me that the quarterback competition is only a competition until they start playing games. As soon as the regular season starts, anything goes.
Tebow will be the starter at the end of the year. That’s just the way it’s going to be. Unfortunately, that means Kyle Orton will have to look for work during the offseason NEXT year. However, he’ll certainly land somewhere good (my guess is Miami.)
In the meantime, will Tebow be able to do something when he gets put into the starting lineup at some point this season? I think he will be able to make plays, but I don’t know how much those plays will mean when it comes to winning games.
Let’s compare Michael Vick (in Atlanta) to Tebow now.
Do we see Tebow beating the Vikings all by himself by running about 50 yards for a score? No.
Do we see Tebow throwing a spot on 50 yard pass to win the game? No.
Do we see Tebow being enough of a pain in the neck that he confuses defenses enough for someone else on the Denver offense to make a play? Yeah, I can see that. He might have the defense worried enough that a receiver can break free or a running back can get in the secondary. That might be something that happens.
However, until he learns that he has to learn to pocket pass correctly, this will never be more than a lingering question. I think he needs longer at number two, but I don’t think the Broncos want to wait.
