The Georgia Bulldogs punched their ticket with a win over Kentucky on Saturday to the SEC Championship. Now they just have to wait a week to see who they will play in the Georgia Dome.
Right now, that team would be LSU, but a huge game is looming and it could change what SEC West team gets a trip to the Dome. LSU will face off with Arkansas in the last game of their seasons and the outcome will determine who goes to the Championship game.
If LSU wins, they will of course head off to face Georgia. But if they lose, then it becomes a 3 way tie, if things remain as they are now, atop the SEC West. The tiebreaker is then decided thusly: Were LSU to lose that game and finish in a three-way tie with the Tide and the Razorbacks, the Tigers would still get the West nod as long as they don’t fall more than five BCS spots behind Alabama. And here is the SEC Rule: The tied team with the highest ranking in the Bowl Championship Series Standings following the last weekend of regular-season games shall be the divisional representative in the SEC championship game, unless the second of the tied teams is ranked within five-or-fewer places of the highest ranked tied team. In this case, the head-to-head results of the top two ranked tied teams shall determine the representative in the SEC championship game. Got all that???!!
Most likely, it will be Georgia vs LSU for the SEC Championship. I watched LSU play Alabama and was not impressed at all with their offense. Their defense was incredibly good, but the offense against a real team (Alabama) was just not that good. They seem to the outside observer to have an overwhelming offense because they crush teams like Mississippi State. But against real teams their offense performs much less effectively and against a real team that has a good defense (like Alabama and now Georgia of late) they do not perform nearly as well on the offensive side of the ball.
I think Georgia has a real shot to win this game. This of course helps Georgia’s bowl options but it will then throw quite the monkey wrench into the BCS title matchup. That would make LSU a 2 loss team and almost assuredly guarantee Alabama a trip to the BCS title game.
Georgia has come on very strong the last part of the season. They fought back from 0-2 and what most people considered down and out. Hopefully, but the SEC Championship game Crowell will be 100% and then their opponent, most likely LSU, is going to have their hands full. Georgia will be rocking the Dome 2 weeks in a row – first Georgia Tech and then for the Championship. It doesn’t get any better!
