Nobody likes losing money or picking the wrong team and NFL football fans especially. This season there are a few teams that should be avoided at all costs and this is my list of which teams are bad bets for the 2011 season.
Seattle Seahawks – The Seahawks haven’t done that well for the past few years and they had a serviceable quarterback in Hasselbeck. Now they don’t have that QB and are working with Tavaris Jackson (we assume, though it might be Whitehurst at some point) and that’s just not the same thing. They haven’t looked good in the preseason and it is definitely what I would call a “restart” season. Lots of people having to learn lots of things and that never translates well on the field against teams that already know everything they need to know.
Carolina Panthers – All eyes are on Cam Newton but those looking for him to lead the Panthers to the playoff promised land are delusional. Yes, he will have some flashes of good play. Yes, he is a 2 threat QB who can run and throw. Yes, he seems to be learning better than some who have come out of college in the last few years. But will the Panthers make the playoffs no. Will they have a winning season, no. It’s just not going to happen, not this year anyway.
Cincinnati Bengals – Andy Dalton is in for a rough year. He looked okay against some preseason matchups and against others he was absolutely abysmal. The team has some very young offensive weapons, but like Dalton, it’s all still a learning process. The team has been disillusioned over the loss of Carson Palmer and how it was handled. They also lost their big media draw in Ochocinco. Dalton was mauled in the game against the Lions. There will be some good points for the Bengals this year, but they’ve got a long way to go, a long way to go.
Buffalo Bills – It’s the Bills. I’m not sure much else needs to be said. They will be once again near the bottom of the NFL barrel. Maybe at the bottom. They just do not have the talent nor does their organization seem willing to spend the dollars in order to get the talent to bring them out of the dregs. Their fans are some of the most loyal in the world sitting out in blizzards to watch them, but it doesn’t make the team any better. This year is no exception.
Oakland Raiders – While they might not be in the absolute cellar this season, they won’t be making any playoffs and I am doubtful they will have a winning season. They drafted Pryor in the supplemental draft, but that is a project that is going to take a lot of time and I am still not convinced he can be an NFL QB. A wide receiver, yes. But a team leading QB, not so much. This year, they are working with Campbell and little else. It will be a long, hard road for the Raiders this year and I do not expect to see many W’s in their stats column.
If you want to hold on to your money and your dignity, you won’t be betting on these teams this season.
