Will The NFL Take A Lesson?

Pen trials
The NBA is making progress, already, and the NFL is still pussyfooting around by comparison. Now, I could have this blow up in my face tomorrow when the NBA talks go awry, David Stern overturns a table, Billy Hunter starts flashing gang signs, and Derek Fisher unzips his outfit to reveal he’s actually Ron Artest and he does his best Malice at the Palace reenactment. That’s all possible.

However.

What if they just coast into the front end of a lockout, get it done in a week, and then they get it figured out before the NFL’s drop dead date of July 14th to get the whole preseason in?

Maybe it’s the kick in the pants that the NFL needs. Maybe the NBA knows the stakes. Maybe the difference in foothold requires the NBA to do this now because they feel they cannot give up the momentum.

Maybe the NFL could have thought about this before they went completely nuclear on this. It would have made more sense to do what the NBA is doing and offer some hope to the fans, but now they can change everything.

They’re talking in private and progress is being made. It’s not gone bad and only a couple owners are timid about getting to a new deal faster rather than slower. But, that’s ok.

They should take one look at the NBA and assume they’ll be made to look stupid if and when the NBA gets a deal done.

That would be enough for me to want to deal. That should enough for any sane person to want to deal.

I’m not pronouncing one league dead and another alive, but I am saying that we’re at a crossroads and someone needs to flinch. It’s either the round ball or the pointy ball.

Take your pick.
