Tweet Smackdown

Angus WhoDat

Twitter has become the new smack talk tool of the day.  NFL players are now baiting each other on the upcoming season.  Talking about Favre, his ankle, people’s knees, other people’s “alleged” inability to catch passes.  In a bring it on beeyotch beatdown the Saints Darren Sharper is tweeting smack to Visanthe Shiancoe and Bryant McKinnie, two of his former Vikings playmates.  I’m not sure if this is entertainment, trouble, or just juvenile…but it’s kind of like a train wreck.  You don’t want to look but you can’t stop yourself.

Sharper “allegedly” started it all with his tweet about Favre’s ankle surgery and how now X marks the spot.  The Vikings have long held that the Saints took a lot of late hits on Favre in the NFC Championship Game.  So this tweet smack was not well received by the Vikings players in Twitterville.  Shiancoe first responded to the media after practice on Thursday and then he went for the tweet smack.  Pointing out that Sharper had an X marks the spot of his own…his surgically repaired knee.

The back and forth smackdown continued on with talk of the “Sharper Shake” and accusations of going for people’s legs during games.  Smack, smack, tweet, tweet….it’s a veritable Internet beatdown.  But does it matter on the field and is it even to be taken seriously?

Sharper was friends with both Shiancoe and McKinnie during his time with the Vikings.  This could all be good natured fun…the kind of harmless talk that goes on between friends engaged in the struggle of competition.  Then again, it could be a little more serious.  I tend to think it’s more the first option.  It’s fun for them, they enjoy pushing each other’s buttons, and as the old saying goes, no publicity is bad publicity.  It gets the media and fans talking.  It gets the towns energized for the upcoming season, and it gets them more Twitter followers.

Twitter is the new medium for all the “bring it” talk in sports.  I think for the most part it’s all just harmless fun.  And quite entertaining as well.  I mean who doesn’t enjoy a tweet like this one from Shiancoe posted on May 28 – “Ask your bold D-coordinator to have u check me all game.. we’ll see where that “sharper shake” takes you @sharper42” Seriously, does it get anymore fun than that?!  I don’t think so.  Tweet tweet peeps.
