Super Bowl Don’ts

There are a few things you expect from the Super Bowl.  A good game.  A great venue.  An exciting National Anthem.  A fun halftime show.  Some funny and creative commercials.  This Super Bowl delivered on 1 thing – the game.

The game was great.  It was everything you want to see.  Big plays.  Big swings in momentum.  A close contest.  The game itself was very good.  The rest of the Super Bowl though left a lot to be desired starting with Jerry Jones stadium behemoth.  Some of the temporary seats weren’t finished??!!  The game is about to start and you’re telling people they may not have a seat or that the seats they are going to sit in may not be entirely safe? No.  This is something you just don’t do.  I realize he wanted to be able to say he hosted the Super Bowl with the most people watching in person ever – but come on, get your stadium in order before the game.  Also, the turf seemed to have some issues as people were slipping, falling, breaking body parts.  I’m not sure the last time I saw so many injuries in a big game…..and significant injuries.

The National Anthem was horrifically done.  I like Christina Aguilera as a singer.  I think she has an amazing voice, but that was not showcased at all.  The arrangement was wrong.  Her performance was just awful.  The sound was terrible (another venue flaw).  One of the things people look forward to is the anthem before the game and there have been some amazing performances over the years.  This one though, not so much.  And you should NEVER forget the words, ever.   The microphones were not great all throughout the pre-game and the game and the sound was just terrible for most everything except for Lea Michelle’s rendition of America The Beautiful – that was extremely well done by her.

I was looking forward to the halftime show.  I like the Black Eyed Peas.  I have lots of their stuff on my IPod, but this show was awful.  Just terrible.  The sound was terrible.  They sounded really bad live.  The dancing lit up people were distracting and not in a good way.  Will I Am had his microphone far too loud and all the other performers had theirs far too low.  Usher looked good, but again the sound was terrible.  It was just disappointing.

There were only a few really good commercials.  Most of them were not creative, not funny, and looked just like any other commercial on any other day.  These commercials are supposed to be attention grabbing.  They are supposed to have people talking the next day.  This year, I think most of the conversation will center around the fact that they weren’t that good.  And to think, these companies paid so much money for these spots and the people I watched with were all very disappointed in them.

All in all, I have to say that it was the game that was the star this year.  And maybe, that’s the way it should be.  After all, it is what the thing is all about, a championship football game and viewers definitely got that.
