Some Rutgers assistants, according to a story I read, showed up to a big recruiting event, Greg Schiano was late, then they found out he was the new head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now, if they didn’t know, and nobody else knew, then I have a problem with this. I’m fine with being as quiet as possible, but when people who work for you (and kinda of depend on you for their jobs) do not know that you might be taking a job in the NFL, that’s a problem.
I don’t know all the details, so I’m not going to get all over Schiano until I have hard details on this, but on the surface of it, it looks like he screwed Rutgers–a place he had turned around–to go to Tampa Bay.
Remember, it’s the Bucs. They won a Super Bowl because of Jon Gruden and Warren Sapp. The Glazers are stupid. They spend more money on their EPL team than they do on the Bucs. The team hasn’t been stable since 2002, and I don’t think Schiano will do any better. Part of it will be him and the other part will be them.
I don’t see how this team is going to get any better with a marginal quarterback, a new head coach who has been in college for a long time, and the Saints, Falcons (woe as they may be,) and the Panthers with Newton. Do you really want THAT job. It’s great to be in Tampa with the nice weather, but that isn’t going to make up for the misery that could befall you as their head coach. I just don’t buy it. I wish I could see how this was going to work, but I don’t.
Good luck to Schiano, but I hope he knows what he’s getting himself into.
