Penn State’s 2012 football recruiting class is roughly six months ahead of where it was a year ago.
The Nittany Lions on Saturday snagged their third verbal commitment when Hyattsville, Md., DeMatha Catholic tight end Brent Wilkerson unexpectedly gave them a pledge Saturday while attending a junior day in University Park with about 20 other juniors Penn State is recruiting, Lions247.com reported.
Wilkerson is the third recruit to commit to Penn State in a little more than a week and the second in two days – Massachusetts linebacker/safety Camren Williams committed to the Lions on Friday.
A 6-foot-4, 245-pounder recruited by many schools as a defensive end, Wilkerson had close to 20 scholarship offers when he committed. Maryland, Clemson, South Carolina, Michigan, North Carolina, Illinois, Michigan State, Iowa, Virginia and Rutgers were among those schools.
Wilkerson’s coach at DeMatha is Bill McGregor, whose nephew is former Central Cambria High School and current Nittany Lion walk-on reserve quarterback Shane McGregor.
