Penn State has released its 2011 spring roster and the good news is that both Rob Bolden and Kevin Newsome are listed, which was expected as both players are currently enrolled and on campus after a rumor-filled off-season.
Some of the things that stood out for me in looking over the roster. Redshirt freshman quarterback Paul Jones is listed at 6-3, 245. If that weight is accurate, he is bigger than any linebacker or fullback on the roster.
Sophomore cornerback Derrick Thomas is back on the team. Thomas was expected to play a big role in the Lions’ nickel defense last fall, but he was suspended for the last nine games for undisclosed reasons.
As usual there are a number of players who have changed positions over the winter. Some of them are:
- Offensive lineman Nate Cadogan, a backup tackle/tight end last season, is now listed as a guard. He is listed at 286, 10 pounds lighter than his 2010 weight.
- Freshman Luke Graham, a member of the 2010 recruiting class, was thought to be an offensive line recruit. He is listed at defensive tackle.
- Freshman Alex Kenney, another 2010 recruit from State College High School, was recruited as an athlete with an eye toward receiver. But the 6-0, 192-pounder is listed as a defensive back.
- Senior Chaz Powell, who has shuttled between receiver and cornerback the the last couple years, is listed at cornerback.
