Paterno Talks About Penn State’s Injuries

At his press conference on Friday Joe Paterno spoke about the Nittany Lions injury problems with several players out for the 2011 season already.

Paterno reported that wide receiver Curtis Drake is out for the 2011 season after breaking bones in his left his leg for the second time. Tight end Gary Gilliam is also likely gone for the season. Earlier in the week, starting defense end Pete Massaro was declared out for 2011 after tearing the ACL in his right knee.

Currently battling injuries of various magnitude are defensive ends Jack Crawford and Eric Latimore, tight end Anthony Szcverba and backup fullback Zach Zwinak.

Safety Nick Sukay, who missed much of the 2011 season with a torn pectoral muscle, is practicing every day with the exception of hitting drills. Running back Brandon Beachum, out all of the 2010 season following knee surgery, is back and in the mix to gain playing time.

“Nowadays, you have so many injuries,” Paterno said. “You look at a team today, and you’ll see five, six, seven kids that haven’t done a thing all spring.”
