Do you hire a new captain to helm a sinking ship?
Mike Martz has been hired in his “geniusness” to run the Bears offense. I’m concerned…let me tell you why.
Mike Martz made his bones coaching who…Kurt Warner. A Hall of Famer who just retired to great fanfare who owns the 3 most prolific passing games in Super Bowl history. Kurt Warner is BEYOND coachable.
I bet if you told Kurt to he’d shove the playbook into the side of his head if he thought it would make him a better player. Do you really think Jay Cutler is going to be that forgiving?
Jay Cutler is a crybaby who has all the talent in the world, but all of it in unharnessed. Mike Martz may be able to harness his talent, but not his attitude.
For that you need a head coach to put Jay in his place. I’m all about second chances, but if Lovie Smith doesn’t get Cutler in-line you can probably bet that he’ll get fired.
The Bears are HEAVILY leveraged on Jay Cutler and that investment CANNOT fail right now. Bringing in Martz is like an attempt at guaranteeing that investment.
Now, I’m not saying that Mike Martz isn’t a great coach or anything, but when he took the Rams to the Super Bowl he basically had Dick Vermeil’s team and he was still riding Kurt Warner-to-Torry Holt. Now he’s going to ride Jay Cutler to Johnny Knox?
I mean, when Kurt Warner became the starter and Dick Vermeil said “We’re gonna play Kurt Warner” everybody thought the Rams were dead. Instead, they birthed a Hall of Fame career.
However, Jay’s had his chance and done nothing with it. He’s a little older that Kurt was when he started his run, but I just don’t see Jay rebounding.
Give Mike Martz a fair-shake and let him get a new QB in the draft. Please…for Mike’s sake.
