Sometimes the line just isn’t working like it should…
The San Diego Chargers possessed a high-powered offense that was at the top of the NFL all season. That offense got them to the playoffs, but could not produce a win in the playoffs. Now that we’ve seen everybody who knows anything say that LaDanian Tomlinson is done in San Diego (including LDT himself) where do the Chargers go from here? Can they really move on without LDT, or did they improve around him enough that they don’t need him anymore?
When the Chargers step into the “war room” in April they’ll have very few needs, but lots of questions. Can Darren Sproles carry them in the backfield for the next few years? Do they need to upgrade the depth on their defense? Are they cursed?
Because the Chargers played so well during the regular season it’s easy to say that they really don’t have much to do on draft day, but the Chargers need to rethink how they’re going to win big games. When they lost to the Jets in the AFC Divisional Playoffs it was because the Jets made big plays at the right times and San Diego couldn’t buy a big play after they’d been making them all season.
The Chargers have all the right pieces, but they don’t fit together. Making this team into a Super Bowl contender is going to require making some tough choices and moving out players that they like for players who fit them better.
If it were me I’d make some moves on both lines and see if I can’t find some players who are true playmakers. Their defense is good, but they couldn’t rush the passer when they needed to. Their offensive is great, but they couldn’t protect the backfield when they needed to.
Who do they get rid of? I have no idea, but they need to shuffle some things around and see if they can’t find a different formula. It just doesn’t all fit together right now…and having Norv Turner at the helm doesn’t help either.
