Philadelphia Eagles Cut Brian Westbrook

Brian Westbrook helped “build” the Eagles, but now he’s flown the coop.

More stars are falling as the Eagles released Brian Westbrook yesterday.  This one isn’t surprising, but it kinda hurts.  Westbrook has been the “other vertebrae” in the backbone of the Philly offense since 2002, and now that he’s worn his body out they’re done with him.  That sucks.

The difference here is that when Brian Westbrook hits the market there should be alot of teams looking to pick him up.  Why wouldn’t you want to pick this guy when you know all that he can do.  Personally, I think all teams under .500 should stay away from him.  He can’t play the “feature” role anymore, but he can REALLY help out.

Teams like the Falcons, Dolphins, even the Patriots, Colts, Chargers, folks like that could use Westbrook sparingly (so he doesn’t get hurt) but very effectively to confuse defenses.

Because he’s such a nice outside runner and he can catch passes that’s just one more thing a team will have to gameplan for.  That’s nice.

I appreciate something about this release that doesn’t always happen.  The Eagles know it’s over between them and Brian, but they said they released “so he could find a new team.”  That’s pretty cool.  I didn’t take Andy Reid for a softie, but at least he has SOME class.

I think Reid fully expects Westbrook to get signed.  This dude had 2100 yards from scrimmage in 2007 and only 1300 of that was rushing.  This dude can really catch the ball.

The way I look at it he’s Reggie Bush before the USC-version of Reggie Bush.  He just killed you on defense because you didn’t know what he was going to be doing.  Now, everyone has to wait in anticipation of where he’ll end up.

I hope Brian continues his career.  He’s fun to watch and works like a dog.  You can tell.  We appreciate that in our players…we really do.
