Seattle Seahawks

The ruling is in and New Orleans coach Sean Payton and General Manager Mickey Loomis are still suspended.  In essence what the pair received for appealing was a reprieve of one week.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell heard the arguments and came back with the same ruling.  Payton is out beginning Monday, April 16 until the final gun of the Super Bowl in February of 2013.  Loomis is out until after game eight of the upcoming season.  Now all is well with the world in the NFL.

The Miami Dolphins have been jilted again as former Green Bay Packers quarterback Matt Flynn went against common opinion and signed a three-year, $26 million deal ($10 million guaranteed) with the Seattle Seahawks instead of with the Miami Dolphins. Flynn was thought to be a shoo-in for the Dolphins as the new Miami head coach Joe Philbin was Green Bay‘s offensive coordinator from 2007-2011,

But instead he spurned south beach for the rain in Seattle, in what is a massive win for Pete Carroll and the Seahawks. Other than Peyton Manning, Flynn was the best free agent quarterback available.

It has been less than 24 hours since Peyton Manning was released by the Indianapolis Colts, and a minimum of six teams have already expressed interest in the 35 year old signal caller. Anybody can speculate where Manning will end up, assuming amongst other things that he only wants to play in a warm weather city, but my main question is how will Peyton Manning’s decision impact the 2012 fantasy football landscape?

Buyer beware for the team that drafts the stud linebacker out of Boston College, Luke Kuechly in this April’s NFL Draft.

After tallying 532 career tackles after just 3 years of college football, Kuechly was already a top prospect before his good showing at the NFL scouting combine, running a 4.58 forty yard dash. However, over the years, the value associated with drafting inside linebackers early has diminished.

Over the last few years, outside, pass rushing linebackers have been a must have on draft day, going early and often in drafts, as evidenced last year by both Von Miller and Aldon Smith getting drafted in the top 10.

Over two years ago, a pair of SEC coaches were at each other’s throats.  Now things have changed so much they not only are no longer in the SEC, but they seem to be working together.

Those two coaches are Ohio State’s Urban Meyer and USC’s Lane Kiffin.  Kiffin was in his only season as head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers.  Meanwhile Urban Meyer’s Florida Gators were coming off their second National Championship in the last three seasons.

No team, with the possible exception of the Miami Dolphins, could use a quarterback more than the Cleveland Browns.  Entering the season McCoy was the toast of Northern Ohio and was expected to be the Browns answer to the position.  Right now the fans think McCoy is the third best quarterback in the state.

Team President Mike Holmgren and Coach Pat Shurmur extended the starting job to McCoy this season.  After glimpses of brilliance last year in games against New England (win), Pittsburgh and the New York Jets (both losses), McCoy earned the job.  Now he has to prove he should keep it

This is another week for the NFL Top Ten, and is there any doubt who the number one team is?  Conventional wisdom tells you one team, and only one team deserves the honor going into week 5.  This is the week the byes begin.  6 teams have a bye but the rest of the teams are battling for a post season berth.

10.  Washington Redskins (3-1) – The Skins enter the Top Ten for the first time.  They are winning with hard hitting defense and a conservative offense led by Rex Grossman.  Mike Shanahan is showing how a well coached team with a lack of talent can win in the NFL.  This week they are off and getting a well deserved rest.

Bill Plaschke is a respected writer for the Los Angeles Times and a guest on “Around the Horn” on ESPN.  In his article about former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel Plaschke shows why.

Plaschke is in complete agreement with the NFL in suspending Tressel as an employee of the Indianapolis Colts.  That is certainly the consensus agreement among Ohio State “haters” around the country, so for Plaschke to go along is not surprising.  Plaschke even admits the league blew it when it comes to former USC coach Pete Carroll.

The NFC west could be the toughest division to anticipate.  As Seattle showed last year, even a team under .500 can win it, outdistancing St. Louis.  The Rams were trying to win the division after finishing last the year before.  Meanwhile Arizona has a new quarterback and the Niners a new coach.  The division could literally be the most competitive in the NFL.

Bad Bets

by Deborah on September 2, 2011

Nobody likes losing money or picking the wrong team and NFL football fans especially.  This season there are a few teams that should be avoided at all costs and this is my list of which teams are bad bets for the 2011 season.

Seattle Seahawks – The Seahawks haven’t done that well for the past few years and they had a serviceable quarterback in Hasselbeck.  Now they don’t have that QB and are working with Tavaris Jackson (we assume, though it might be Whitehurst at some point) and that’s just not the same thing.  They haven’t looked good in the preseason and it is definitely what I would call a “restart” season.  Lots of people having to learn lots of things and that never translates well on the field against teams that already know everything they need to know.
