San Diego Chargers

Could it be the marriage between the New Orleans Saints and quarterback Drew Brees is over?  Probably not.  But the battle scars might be something that will never be fixed.

Brees is upset at his naming by the team as Franchise player.  This means he will be paid a one year salary of the average of the top three quarterbacks in the NFL.  Brees wants a long term deal and has not made it a secret to anyone asking.  Over the last two days, Brees has shown his displeasure.

The short lived feud between the New England Patriots and wide receiver Wes Welker is over.  Welker will be staying with the Pats through the next season after inking a new Franchise tag contract Tuesday.

The Welker signing keeps the most consistent receiver quarterback Tom Brady has ever worked with on the team.  Something Brady has to be celebrating.  Welker announced the news on a Twitter account Tuesday, hitting the jackpot with a one year deal over $9 million dollars.

Junior Seau was found dead at the age of 43, and, I have no plans on getting into the details of whether or not it was self-inflicted.  It’s not worth it.  The bottom line is:  Losing Junior Seau is every sports fan’s loss.  He was one of the greatest players of all time, and he was certainly the most energetic player who ever played the game.

I heard someone mention this morning that only two guys he had seen play the game like they were still in middle school were  Brett Favre and Junior Seau.  I would propose to you that Junior Seau played the game like he was in elementary school.  Nothing against Brett Favre, but Junior Seau had more energy than everyone else in the league combined.

Today, May 2nd, Junior Seau was found dead in his home in Oceanside, CA. TMZ broke the story at 10 a.m. that Seau was found with a gunshot wound to his chest. Reports say that it was a suicide but police continue to investigate the cause of death. This is not the first time that Seau has possibly considered suicide. In 2010, he drove his car off a cliff but said he had just fallen asleep at the wheel. Whatever the cause of death, he will always be remembered as one of the greatest linebackers to play in the NFL.

The football world is in mourning after the announcement of the death of Junior Seau.  Seau was found Wednesday in his apartment from an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.

Attempts will be made over the next few weeks to determine why Seau committed something so tragic.  What could have been so overwhelming that continuing to live was something he couldn’t handle?  Already this death is being compared to other former players that have done the same over the past few months.

Going into the 2012 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers knew that they would need help on defense. The goal for the draft was to fill their needs on defensive line and the secondary. Once they solidified those needs then they could move on to bringing some depth to the offensive line and maybe a back-up receiver. With these goals in mind, the Chargers set out to draft the right pieces. They flew right under the radar of analysts and drafted the perfect pieces for the 2012 season.

The San Diego Chargers 2012-2013 schedule has officially been announced. A few things to notice from this schedule is that the Chargers will be on national TV five times this year, the difficulty of their schedule, and how it impacts the whole AFC West.

The first piece of good news is the abundance of national TV games. Their first game of the season will be September 10, 2012 at the Oakland Raiders on ESPN Monday Night Football. October 7, 2012 they will play at the New Orleans Saints on NBC Sunday Night Football. October 15, 2012 they will host the Denver Broncos on ESPN. November 1, 2012 they will host the Kansas City Chiefs on NFL Network Thursday Night Football. Finally, they will play December 23, 2012 at the New York Jets on NBC. It will be exciting to see them getting more exposure on national TV. Sadly with good news, there is also bad news.

It’s amazing how one signing can change the direction of a division so suddenly.   With all the fanfare of a hero coming home, Peyton Manning was introduced yesterday to the Denver Broncos media and fans, thus showing the rest of the division things have changed in the ole West.

Let’s start with the Oakland Raiders.  First round picks for quarterback Carson palmer last year was supposed to give the Raiders the division title and a pass into the AFC Title game for the next few years to come.  But a new owner, new general manager and a new coach changed the face of this team for the first time in 50 years.  Now the Raiders will approach things with the NFL thinking, rather than the “maverick” ideas from Al Davis that led to the Raiders being a premier franchise for years.

Vincent JacksonI personally think this is one of the smartest decisions the Chargers have made since I became a Fan over 40 years ago… Trust me, I’ve been one of the biggest critics of their decisions; from not working something out with Junior Seau and Rodney Harrison to not keeping Drew Brees. Although I have come to love the play and attitude of Phillip Rivers, I still feel Brees is a much better quarterback that will sit aside Fouts, Marino and Elway, but, in my eyes, Rivers is still under review. But that is another conversation for a different day.

I’m all for the San Diego Chargers signing Vincent Jackson to a long-term contract. It’s what’s best for the team, we all know it. But we also know that he will be playing the role of “Belle” at the free agency ball, as far as WR’s go. Meaning, it’s gonna cost ya quite a bit of coin if you want him to dance with you.
