Pittsburgh Steelers

It’s the Pittsburgh Steelers offseason so their just has to be more drama.  But this time it is coming from the Steelers number one wide receiver Mike Wallace.  And from the sounds of it, the drama will continue till at least training camp.

Mike Wallace was tendered a one year contract by the Steelers for$2.7 million and he is not happy with the offer. He has been waiting for some love from other teams around the NFL, but has not gotten any to this point. Some rumors yes, but nothing more than that.  ESPN’s Adam Shefter is reporting that Wallace does not plan to participate in any of the spring or summer camps.  Good chance Steeler fans will not see him till Training camp late this summer.

The Pittsburgh Steelers Have to get sick of this, year in and year out.  If he is not nursing broken toes or fingers then it is outside activity that draws attention to him. Most Steeler fans love Ben, but I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt, his yearly Drama is starting to get old.

The Pittsburgh Steelers come out of Rookie Camp with no injuries and 2 players from the most recent draft signed.   Chris  Rainey and Almeda Ta’amu both signed  early.  As for the Play of the Rookie’s from a local insider/beat writer (Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post Gazette)  he said it compared unfavorably to the Pittsburgh Maulers Football Football team.

For those of you that are late to the Party, the Maulers were a USFL Team that lasted only a couple of seasons in Pittsburgh.   They were not very good, and certainly not good enough to be sustainable.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been known for tough defense for years and years.    Not to mention, a Punishing Defense that likes to make the other team hurt.     The Steelers Defense has the fines to back that statement.     You can bet though, going forward that the Steelers Better change the way they hit not to mention where they Hit if they would like to stay on the field.

Usually the Ohio State Buckeyes are well represented in the NFL Draft.  It’s not odd for 3-4 players to be drafted in the first rounds, with others being taken later.  However this year, after a season in which unrest and inconsistency hampered the buckeyes, only 3 players were taken in the entire 253 picks.  Then two more signed on as free agents.

The first player selected was offensive lineman Michael Adams by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 56th pick overall.  Adams dropped into the second round because of his alleged positive drug test at the combine in Indianapolis.  This sent Adams to Pittsburgh to try and clear things up with the team he wanted to play for.

Mike Adams, standout offensive lineman from the Ohio State Buckeyes has been a lifelong Pittsburgh Steeler’s Fan.     He has always wanted to be a Steeler, but after a  5 game suspension and then blowing his drug test at the Combine, the Steelers Brass told him he was off their board.       So what is a man to do?     That’s right, he jumped in his car and drove to Pittsburgh.

Kevin Colbert, the GM of the Pittsburgh Steelers told Mike that he was off the board and not of interest to the Team after his positive test.     That is what spurred the road trip, and when he got to Pittsburgh…The Door Was Open.

For the first time in years, the Pittsburgh Steelers are at a crossroads in the off season.  The Steelers tried to gain youth in the draft across the offensive line with David DeCastro out of Stanford and Mike Adams from Ohio State.  Those picks will make quarterback Ben Roethlisberger happy, but what will make him even happier is re-signing receiver Mike Wallace.

Wallace is one of the premier pass catchers in the NFL, and the best on the Steelers, but his contract is up.  As a restricted free agent, Wallace really has no options.   If a team wanted to sign him prior to the draft would have to give up a first round pick to the Steelers in order to do so.  That didn’t happen.

Consensus draft pick for the first round of the draft for the Pittsburgh Steelers has them drafting either Dontari Poe from the Memphis or Dont’a Hightower from Alabama.  Lets look at both players a little closer.

The Pittsburgh Steelers revealed their new Throwup…I mean Throwback Uniforms today. They consist of white pants with a Black and Gold Prisoner Striped Jersey. Not sure what they are trying to accomplish, but these jersey’s are a “Don Cherry Like” Must See!

Maybe that is it. They are supposed to be reminiscent of days gone by, but the horizontal alternating black and gold strips are just hideous to look at. I am hoping these will just be a one-year, one game wonder.

The Needs are many and more so this year than most. With the players that were released, and retired, it has created some holes. Holes that can be filled from the bench, but it is time to start drafting the reinforcements.

“From a talent standpoint, we’re never in a rebuilding mode, I think we’re retooling.” – General manager Kevin Colbert on the number of veterans lost by the Steelers this year.(The Sports Exchange)
