Philadelphia Eagles

To say it has been a tough couple of years for Donovan McNabb would be an understatement.   The former Eagles signal caller has been put through the NFL torture chamber lately.  Still, McNabb showed on ESPN Monday night he is still ready, willing and quite possibly, able to perform for another team.

One NFL coach is standing up and singing the praises of McNabb.  That coach being McNabb’s former mentor Andy Reid of the Philadelphia Eagles.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has to be looking in the mirror wondering what he did to upset the football Gods.   Hall of Fame wide Receiver Art Monk is the latest in a long line of retired players to join in another lawsuit against the league.

We have discussed ad nauseum what Goodell hasn’t done to help those in need who placed the NFL on the map.  To make the NFL what it is today for him to become Commissioner with only one goal in mind, the 18 game season.

Vince Young is back.  No not with the Philadelphia Eagles.  That experiment lasted but one season.  No Young is in Buffalo where the former Heisman trophy winner out of Texas is now the new backup quarterback for the Bills.

This should be an interesting ride for Young.  He is stepping into a situation where the Bills starter, Ryan Fitzpatrick, is an average quarterback at best.  He had the Bills out to their best start in years last season, yet the team digressed and finished third in the AFC East.

It’s always hard when a longtime NFL Veteran decides to call it quits.  For Brian Dawkins, after 16 seasons, the end is here and he announced prior to the NFL draft so the Denver Broncos could make plans accordingly.

Dawkins didn’t call a press conference to make his decision known.  The new way of announcing things for athletes is via the twitter account.  Dawkins didn’t disappoint.

Rumblings are starting to percolate from the offices of the Cleveland Browns offices.  Rumors of things that could happen prior or during Thursday night’s first round of the NFL Draft.

These rumors could be just some last minute posturing.  Or there could be some meaning behind what is going on.  Whatever the reason, the Browns fourth pick figures to be a pivotal spot in the draft.

The Browns are a team in need of almost everything.  So whatever direction they go will make the team better.  Even if they trade down, the team will pick up much needed talent.  However over the weekend news starting seeping out of Philadelphia the Eagles were ready to unload cornerback Asante Samuels for next to nothing.

The Eagles instead of looking at the free agency, they started first signing their players. After giving WR DeSean Jackson the franchise tag, they signed him on a 5 year deal worth $48.5 million, a great deal for both the WR and the Eagles. This great contract extension takes out all the preoccupation and the nervous for all the fans, the team welcomes back the explosive receiver the team have.

The new NFL year began Tuesday afternoon and as of midday on day two the Eagles haven’t signed a big name free agent. The Eagles didn’t make a blockbuster trade, pick Peyton Manning up at the airport, or even schedule a meeting with any free agents.

The Eagles did however, help themselves two of the most under rated players in the entire league in Trent Cole and Todd Herremans got extensions keeping them happy and in Philadelphia for years to come.

With the new NFL league year set to begin Tuesday and while the March 13 free agency hasn’t even began, we have already seen a flurry of big moves in just the past few days.

First the Colts decided against keeping long time QB Peyton Manning and released him, making him maybe the biggest free agent to ever hit the market. The Colts did not just stop at Manning either the Colts decided to go into full rebuilding mode also cutting running back Joseph Addai, Tight End Dallas Clark, Middle Linebacker Gary Bracket, and Safety Melvin Bullit, Curtis Painter was also part of the Colts house cleaning, but that’s a move Colts fans probably aren’t too upset over.

Tag You’re It

Franchise tag season is underway and several teams have made their intentions known with a few surprises in the mix.

In the not surprising category, the Saints have franchised QB Drew Brees.  Even though there had been reports of some frustration on Brees side with the Saints on contract issues, the Saints decided to put an exclusive tag on Brees.  It is clearly not surprising that they would do this in order to keep Brees from being able to talk to any other teams.  The going rate for QBs is 16 to 17 million a year and Brees looks to receive that come contract time.

Buyer beware for the team that drafts the stud linebacker out of Boston College, Luke Kuechly in this April’s NFL Draft.

After tallying 532 career tackles after just 3 years of college football, Kuechly was already a top prospect before his good showing at the NFL scouting combine, running a 4.58 forty yard dash. However, over the years, the value associated with drafting inside linebackers early has diminished.

Over the last few years, outside, pass rushing linebackers have been a must have on draft day, going early and often in drafts, as evidenced last year by both Von Miller and Aldon Smith getting drafted in the top 10.
