Oakland Raiders

With a stroke of the pen, the Minnesota Vikings will be staying in the land of 10,000 lakes with a new stadium.  So with that latest tax placed upon the fine citizens of Minnesota, what team is now the leading candidate to become the new franchise in Los Angeles?

As of last winter it was down to 4 choices.  Minnesota was in the lead, up until the new stadium financing went through.  Jacksonville was a second place pick.  However new ownership seems to have ended that dream.  There was the thought of an expansion team led by Magic Johnson, until Johnson joined the group that bought the Los Angeles Dodgers.  So that leaves the city of Angels only one more possibility.

Throughout the NCAA, players are hurting.  Not only are they in agony, but also their extended families.  Yet that information is ignored, even denied by the governing body of college athletics.

Every so often we catch a glimpse of a player whose family is so down, so destitute that they are begging for help.  Families who are looking to get in from the cold, their electric turned back on, and their gas lit so they can be warm.  Yet colleges, boosters or even some person looking to help cannot because it would be a violation of the rules the NCAA has instituted.

So as the Chicago Bears sign one running back, upsetting another, a third has retired.  So goes the sage of the Monsters of the Midway.

The Bears have signed former Oakland Raiders running back Michael Bush, the reason why is not known as of yet.  Bush said in a conference call after signing the contract was a four-year deal worth $14 million, with $7 million guaranteed.

Under normal circumstances, this agreement would make sense.  However this is not normal.  Chicago already has Matt Forte, one of the best running backs in the league and the team’s franchise player.  The franchise tag means Forte will be paid $7.74 million, which is $7 million more than he was paid in 2011.

It’s amazing how one signing can change the direction of a division so suddenly.   With all the fanfare of a hero coming home, Peyton Manning was introduced yesterday to the Denver Broncos media and fans, thus showing the rest of the division things have changed in the ole West.

Let’s start with the Oakland Raiders.  First round picks for quarterback Carson palmer last year was supposed to give the Raiders the division title and a pass into the AFC Title game for the next few years to come.  But a new owner, new general manager and a new coach changed the face of this team for the first time in 50 years.  Now the Raiders will approach things with the NFL thinking, rather than the “maverick” ideas from Al Davis that led to the Raiders being a premier franchise for years.

Free Agency in the NFL starts Tuesday afternoon and already, a big name has dropped into the lap of one of the league Super Bowl contenders.

Randy Moss will take his talents out west and play for the San Francisco 49ers.  This is a monster signing for the Niners and coach Jim Harbaugh, because it gives them the weapon they needed in the Championship game with the New York Giants last year when Ted Ginn, Jr was unable to play.

AFC Playoff Picture

by Deborah on December 27, 2011

The AFC playoff picture is partially painted through week 16 but there are still some spots up for grabs under various scenarios.

Already solidified are the AFC East and a 1st round bye with the Patriots.  The AFC South spot is also sorted out with the Houston Texans.  The two wildcard teams right now are the Steelers and Ravens but that could change depending on what happens this weekend.

The Ravens clinch the AFC North division and a first-round bye with a Ravens win OR a Ravens tie and a Steelers loss or tie OR a Steelers loss.  The Ravens clinch home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs with a Ravens win and a Patriots loss at the Bills.

Controlling Fate

by Deborah on December 23, 2011

Several teams in the NFL control their own fate coming down to the last 2 games of the regular season.  Their goal now is just to win the last 2 games and then let the post season chips fall where they may.

The Falcons, Lions, Broncos, Raiders, Giants and Cowboys are all in control of their own fates.  Some of these teams have an easier road than others, but all have only one place they need to go, the win column.

In an earlier article on this site, a question posed is the Ohio State punishment enough.  That is a question we have answered before.  However that challenge will be accepted again.

Frankly it was too much.  Here’s why.

The players involved were all punished, yes all.  Including Terrelle Pryor, who ran away from trouble the NCAA imposed.  Pryor circumvented the NFL rules to enter the league, but he sat out the first 5 games.  This was the same penalty he would have received at Ohio State.

Road To The Playoffs

by Deborah on December 17, 2011

The NFL teams continue on the road to the playoffs this weekend and the time is growing short in which to make significant moves.  Most teams have 3 games left and for some those are all must win games to get into the post season.

The Falcons helped themselves on the road to the playoffs by the beating they gave the Jaguars on Thursday night.  The Falcons are 9-5 now and sitting in the top spot of the wildcard of the NFC.  However, the Lions are right behind them at 8-5 and face a tough road with games against both the Raiders and the Packers coming up.

Big Game Sunday

by Deborah on December 11, 2011

Big games on tap today in the NFL, some with division implications and some are just big rivalries.

The Cowboys and Giants are on tap for Sunday night football. This game is big for both teams.  A divisional matchup and a chance for the Giants to make up some ground on the Cowboys.  The Giants will have Ahmad Bradshaw back for this game and hope to be able to run the ball against the Cowboys.  Currently in the NFC East the Cowboys are 7-5 and the Giants are 6-6.  The Cowboys have lost 1 and the Giants are on a 4 game losing streak coming off a heartbreaking loss to the Packers.  Definitely a big game.
