It’s not always the health of a former player in the NFL that goes bad. Sometimes it can be the moral compass they have. Stories of OJ, Warren Sapp and now the latest and maybe, the greatest linebacker of all time, Lawrence Taylor, have hit bottom.
The 53-year-old Hall of Famer retired in 1994 after a 13-year career with the Giants but has since struggled with legal and financial troubles. It has not been easy since Taylor left the field for the final time.
Ever since Osi Umenyiora cracked down on the Giants and started spilling all the sordid details of their on-again/off-again contractual relationship/promises, I think it’s been one downhill climb. I mean, downhill fast. The Giants were probably willing to forgive and forget, but, I think the emergence Jason Pierre-Paul might have sealed the deal with the Giants. They see Pierre-Paul as the future and Osi as the past. So, when Osi starts saying that he probably won’t be able to get an extension done, I think that might be the biggest reason. Someone apppeared and took his spot.
As of today the secret is out on who the New Orleans Saints want as their “replacement” coach for Sean Payton. It’s none other than Bill Parcells, Payton’s mentor. At first the name sounds a little far-fetched. But on second thought, it may not be so “out there.”
Parcells has been out of coaching since 2006. Yet he has stayed in the game as the President of the Miami Dolphins until last year, and then as a commentator on ESPN. Yet give me one person who has the intestinal fortitude to tell Parcells the game has passed him by.
Free Agency in the NFL starts Tuesday afternoon and already, a big name has dropped into the lap of one of the league Super Bowl contenders.
Randy Moss will take his talents out west and play for the San Francisco 49ers. This is a monster signing for the Niners and coach Jim Harbaugh, because it gives them the weapon they needed in the Championship game with the New York Giants last year when Ted Ginn, Jr was unable to play.
This is a preview of Harbaugh Throws To, Then Signs Randy Moss. Read the full post
This is the off season of mal-content for the New York Jets. Wide receiver complaints about the quarterback, complaints on the offensive coordinator, the head coach no longer issuing bold and brash predictions. Now the defense will be heard from.
Not the defense arguing its case, but the actual defensive side of the ball. This time it’s coming from All-pro linebacker Bart Scott.
It seems Scott is concerned with the way he is being used. Scott is frustrated with regularly being removed from the field on third downs and the Jets plummeting to an 8-8 record after they were expected to be in the Super Bowl. Instead it was the Giants representing New York by winning the title and that doesn’t make Jet fans happy.
When Osi Umenyiora went to the press and told them that he was over it and he was promised an extension and all of that, he must have really ticked off Giants management. I mean, because it’s never gotten done. So, they’ve been at odds for quite a while now. Well, Giants GM, Jerry Reese, has made some new comments on the subject. Let’s see if this can move along.
“We got a lot to talk about. It could happen. Right now we have a lot of issues to look at and got to formulate a good game plan and see if we can get it done.”
Two-time Super Bowl champion Tom Coughlin chats with James Brown and Phil Simms about the Big Apple victory parade, his unique coaching style and the head coach’s future on the sidelines.
Victor Cruz earned his paycheck and now he’s trying to cash in. The emerging-star wide receiver is making a play to get paid, and, frankly, can you blame him? His name came up just about as much as Eli Manning’s as he became a star this season. So, when he wants to make more money, I’d say it’s fair to think that he’s outplayed his original deal.
He was an All-Pro, broke the receiving yardage record for the Giants franchise, and he was an undrafted free agent. So, he’s really outplayed his contract. Cruz has been honest, but not ridiculous about his need for a new deal. I think these comments are just about perfect:
Speculation continues to run amuck around the corners of the NFL on where Peyton Manning will end up next year. Never has the NFL seen this kind of frenzy over a single player.
The media is constantly speculating and asking the same questions over and over. Will Manning remain with the Colts or can he actually leave for another team? Ordinarily a quarterback of this stature would not be going anywhere. However there are 28 million reasons why the Colts will let Manning leave the only franchise he has known.
Ok, the Super Bowl is over. Everyone’s packed up their lockers and gone home. Now we have to start planning for the 2012-13 season. There are always going to be early favorites, lines in Vegas, and speculation about who can do what. So, who are the early favorites to get to the Super Bowl next year?
The Steelers have a clear line that takes them right back to the playoffs and a Super Bowl berth. Basically, they have all the right pieces and they had some rotten luck this year. Overall, they’re the best team in their division, they have the best QB in their division, and they’ve won two with this core of guys.
