New Orleans Saints

As we discussed earlier, Jonothan Vilma has filed a lawsuit against NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for defamation.   This seems to be a difficult word to understand, as found out on ESPN’s morning radio show “Mike and Mike.”

For those who listened to Mike Greenberg this morning on ESPN, let us examine the definition.  According to the English dictionary, Defamation is defined as “the offense of writing or saying something bad about someone that is not true and makes people have a bad opinion of them.”   Hey Mike, was it that hard to get clarification on what defamation means?

Could it be the marriage between the New Orleans Saints and quarterback Drew Brees is over?  Probably not.  But the battle scars might be something that will never be fixed.

Brees is upset at his naming by the team as Franchise player.  This means he will be paid a one year salary of the average of the top three quarterbacks in the NFL.  Brees wants a long term deal and has not made it a secret to anyone asking.  Over the last two days, Brees has shown his displeasure.

It is a moment that has been coming; now it is here.  NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is going to have to come clean on what he has regarding the New Orleans Saints players and “bounty-gate.”

Jonathan Vilma, one of the 4 players suspended by Goodell, has sued the NFL Commissioner in federal court for slander and libel for public remarks made when issuing accusations and discipline against the team, coaches and four players in the Saints‘ “bounty” scandal.  Vilma was banned from playing for the 2012 season and issued a fine for allegedly offering a $10,000 bounty to knock players out of games.

The scandal in New Orleans is past and now the rest of the penalties have been announced.  The biggest non-issue is almost over, but not without controversy.

Sean Payton, Gregg Williams, Joe Vitt and Mickey Loomis were the first shoe to drop.  The other shoe dropped Wednesday as “Czar”, or should we say Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended four players in conjunction with their participation on “bounty-gate”.

The Commissioner suspended linebackers Jonathan Vilma and Scott Fujita, along with defensive tackles Anthony Hargrove and Will Smith.  All had different culpability in the event and thus, got different suspensions.  However Vilma was hit the hardest.

The recent one year suspension of Sean Payton from coaching in the NFL was unprecedented in the history of the National Football League.  There has been lots of opinions regarding whether the crime fits the punishment but for the most part everyone was ready to move on with the next phase for the New Orleans Saints.

With the recent announcement of what the 1 year suspension actually entails, I wonder if it’s not time coaches and other staff members of the NFL look at forming a labor organization (union) to protect their rights and the right to fair representation to all matters as it relate to their jobs, wages, working conditions and protection of agreement in place.

Sounds like a headline straight out of The Onion, but I assure you it’s not.  This is the actual current state of the New Orleans Saints.

Effective April 16th, Sean Payton is relieved of his head coaching duties and suspended from the NFL until after the Super Bowl in February of 2013 for his part in Bounty-Gate.  Assistant Head Coach/Linebackers Coach, Joe Vitt, will oversee the off-season program and assume all of the responsibilities of a Head Coach until week 1 of the season, at which time Offensive Line Coach, Aaron Kromer, will take over as Head Coach until week 6, during Vitt’s 6 game suspension for his part in Bounty-gate.  Everyone hop on!  The merry-go-round is flying!

I love this expression as it applies to coaching the New Orleans Saints. What exactly does this mean? Drew Brees has been the team’s on field coach for the last few years anyway so doesn’t it makes sense to have him lead this committee. What a great opportunity for other players to step up to the plate and show their leadership skills in the locker room and on the field. Believe me there are plenty of them on this team.

The ruling is in and New Orleans coach Sean Payton and General Manager Mickey Loomis are still suspended.  In essence what the pair received for appealing was a reprieve of one week.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell heard the arguments and came back with the same ruling.  Payton is out beginning Monday, April 16 until the final gun of the Super Bowl in February of 2013.  Loomis is out until after game eight of the upcoming season.  Now all is well with the world in the NFL.

So here is what we, as football fans, are looking at so far this year; a pretty good Super Bowl, a god among men leaves his team, new coaches everywhere, “Bounty-Gate” and the always revolving debate on who should go number one.  This has been a ride so far and it’s just heating up.

Taking the focus off the obvious Saints news for a moment, let’s take a look at the roster as it currently stands and see what needs the team may address in the draft.  I won’t be taking into account the pending player suspensions as there are too many variables in that situation.

OFFENSE
Quarterback

Drew Brees*, Chase Daniel, Sean Canfield
Assuming Brees gets a long term deal done before the season or that he signs the franchise tender, he’ll be in uniform this year.  Daniel is a capable backup and Canfield will most likely be on the practice squad.
