Two college quarterbacks with big names were left undrafted over the weekend. Kellen Moore of Boise State and Case Keenum of Houston were outstanding in college, but their talents just don’t transfer into the pro game according to some scouts. Yet because of their numbers both are being invited to training camp to try out for a spot on teams.
Keenum will stay close to home and sign on with the Houston Texans. This may be more of a recognition signing by the Texans rather than a possible job with the club. This does show a lot of good will by the team to a player that put Cougar football back on the map this season.

If you listen closely you can hear that low rumble that is coming from Detroit. The one that says the Lions are ready to be taken seriously. Not the little engine that could, but the lion that could eat you for dinner.
The Lions made some noise in the first round of this year’s draft when at 22 they took OT Riley Reiff out of Iowa. Reiff is not just a big tackle, he’s a HUGE tackle. He is 6′ 6″ and weighs in at 313 pounds. Reiff was brought in for one reason and one reason only, to protect Matthew Stafford. He will likely start on the right side but then will probably move to the left as time progresses. Reiff started every game at Iowa and proved very durable in a run heavy offense. He’s very smart and will likely adapt very well to NFL speed and playbooks. A definite roar for the Lions.

Calvin Johnson, Megatron to those of us who listen to sports radio, has won the vote for who will appear on the cover of the new Madden Football game. I’ve talked about this before, but, I still kinda want to see Matthew Stafford throwing him the ball in the background. I mean, if Walt Disney could invent a specialized camera with which he shot “Snow White” in greater clarity than anyone had shot an animated movie before, then surely the graphic wizards that work for EA can figure out how to get the quarterback in the background shot so that we can see him throwing Johnson the ball.

At some point in all our lives as sports fans we ask ourselves the question, “Would I suffer what they go through for the money they get paid?” Most always the answer is a vociferous Yes! However most of us don’t think about the long lasting ordeals these players deal with everyday.
Especially in the NFL. Right now there is a class action lawsuit against the NFL because of injuries players suffered that, according to the suit, could have been diagnosed earlier or prevented by the league. This is an argument that will be tough to win. Almost certainly on its face it appears to have merit, until you look at the recent words by Detroit Lions center Dominic Raiola.

Admittedly, the name Steve Mariucci never crossed the collective minds of those who were thinking of a replacement for Bobby Petrino at Arkansas. After all, who would think of the former coach-turned announcer?
Mariucci has never “left” the game. He just left coaching. The former San Francisco and Detroit head coach has turned his life into the NFL Network. However circumstances change and so do the paths of life. Meaning Mariucci could be convinced the college game is his next foray.

Calvin Johnson is hands down the best wide receiver in football and now he is getting paid like, signing a huge eight-year deal worth up to $132 million, the largest contract in NFL history.
Johnson’s agent, Bus Cook, said the contract is worth $60 million guaranteed. That figure and the total value of the deal are both NFL records.
Johnson had a year remaining on a deal he signed after being drafted in 2007, but this extension starts immediately and runs through the 2019 season.

In my last post I said this is THE OFFSEASON for the Cleveland Browns and here is just another reason why. Not just our own free agents but also other team’s free agents. This market is flooded and the Browns have the salary cap space to do some impressive things.
Let’s talk about the New Orleans Saints and the issues surrounding them. Free Agents include Drew Brees, Marques Colston, Robert Meachem, and Carl Nicks among others. It has been said that the Saints and Brees camp currently are way off when it comes to the numbers. This is a great thing for the Cleveland Browns.

The Lions and running back Jahvid Best appear to be on different pages regarding his return to football.
Best suffered 2 concussions with the Lions this past season, 1 in preseason and 1 during the season. After the last one, he suffered lingering post-concussion symptoms and was out for the remainder of the year. Best has also suffered a very scary head injury while in college.
According to Best, he told the Detroit Free Press earlier this month that he is symptom free and that he will definitely be back next season. The Lions don’t seem as convinced.

Well, just like that, the Lions are out again. At least they made the playoffs this year. We couldn’t say that for them for many years before this, but it kind of hurts for them to be snuffed out the way they were.
Early in this game, the Lions were leading and I turned to my wife and told her that the Lions were leading. She said, “Yeah, I read that,” but she said it with confusion. She knew the Lions weren’t supposed to be in front. Perhaps the Saints just needed to get the rust off, but they did in the second half and they blew doors on the Lions. It’s no surprise that the Lions lost, but I think it’s a surprise that the game wasn’t 44-40.

The Detroit Lions take on the New Orleans Saints in New Orleans today for the second game of round 1. This is a game that could be close or a blow out depending on how both teams play.
The Saints are in the category of teams that has a less than stellar defense. Their offense, mainly Drew Brees, is quite prolific and makes up for the team’s giving up so many yards to their opponents. Games with 5 or 6 TDs are not uncommon. It is how they win. They put up enough points that even if they give up 21 or 24 points or more to a team they can still win in the end. It will be the same today. They will try and put up as many points as possible to keep the Lions playing catch up.
