Chicago Bears

So as the Chicago Bears sign one running back, upsetting another, a third has retired.  So goes the sage of the Monsters of the Midway.

The Bears have signed former Oakland Raiders running back Michael Bush, the reason why is not known as of yet.  Bush said in a conference call after signing the contract was a four-year deal worth $14 million, with $7 million guaranteed.

Under normal circumstances, this agreement would make sense.  However this is not normal.  Chicago already has Matt Forte, one of the best running backs in the league and the team’s franchise player.  The franchise tag means Forte will be paid $7.74 million, which is $7 million more than he was paid in 2011.

Brandon Marshall To The Bears

by Patton on March 14, 2012

The Dolphins dealt Brandon Marshall to the Bears for a couple of third round picks.  Now, you could say that that’s not bad considering all the trouble that Marshall could be, but, really, it’s less than what they gave up to get him and they’re basically just giving up on him.  So, there’s no more big receiver in Miami to play with Peyton Manning, and the Dolphins seem to be out of the sweepstakes.

For the Bears, they get to put Marshall back together with Jay Cutler.  So, Jay Cutler has a true number one target to throw the ball to, and now the offense can change and soar with a new OC.  The question is:  What else do the Bears need to be competitive?

Everyone was expecting the big news today to be free agent signings, but the Chicago Bears got a jump on free agency by acquiring Pro Bowl wide receiver Brandon Marshall in a trade with the Miami Dolphins for the Bears’ third-round draft picks in 2012 and 2013, as first reported by Fox’s Jay Glazer.

This is a great move for the Bears, who were expected to target a high-profile free-agent receiver such as Vincent Jackson, but instead they reunite Jay Cutler with one of his top targets from his time in Denver.

Easily the most talked about rule change prior to the past NFL season was the kick off being moved to the 35-yard line.  Returners and kickers combined were upset and it changed the game.  All in the name of better safety for anyone involved.

As expected, the number of kickoff returns and kickoff returns per game was significantly down from previous years.  53.4 percent of kickoffs were returned this season, a massive drop from 80.1 percent in 2010.  Touchbacks soared to 43.5 percent this season, more than two and a half times last year’s rate of 16.4 percent.

It’s been almost one year since Dave Duerson was found dead in his apartment in Miami on a Saturday morning.  The cause of death for the 50 year old wasn’t known at the time.  Now we know the cause was suicide and the family is taking action.

Duerson’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the NFL on Thursday.  The suit claims the league knew concussions led to long term health problems and didn’t do enough to prevent or treat the injuries that severely damaged his brain before he killed himself last year.

Big Game Sunday

by Deborah on December 11, 2011

Big games on tap today in the NFL, some with division implications and some are just big rivalries.

The Cowboys and Giants are on tap for Sunday night football. This game is big for both teams.  A divisional matchup and a chance for the Giants to make up some ground on the Cowboys.  The Giants will have Ahmad Bradshaw back for this game and hope to be able to run the ball against the Cowboys.  Currently in the NFC East the Cowboys are 7-5 and the Giants are 6-6.  The Cowboys have lost 1 and the Giants are on a 4 game losing streak coming off a heartbreaking loss to the Packers.  Definitely a big game.

At the Bears Game-1
The Bears are missing Jay Cutler and they do not have a viable solution at quarterback.  Matt Forte gets his knee dinged by a helmet and now they basically have no offense.  How bad is it in Chicago?

Well, I heard yesterday that Matt Forte has the exact same injury that Jay Cutler had at the end of last season.  You know, the one where everyone killed him for not being able to go back into the game in the NFC title game.  Yeah, only when Cutler got hurt everyone was killing him.  Now, there is some discussion about whether or not Forte should come back and play.  He doesn’t have a long term deal, and he needs to have a good season to get paid.

“This Just In!!  Brett Favre is Still Retired!”

It sounds like an old Saturday Night Live skit on Weekend Update.  Favre finally left the NFL after a subpar 2010 season.  This after 5 years of retirements and coming back.  That story is old and tired and not what the league needs again.

However everytime a quarterback goes down this season, Favre is the first name brought up.  One of the first questions to management is would a phone call be placed to Mississippi.  A question usually followed by a complete denial.

Watching Our First Bears Game Together

He is the kind of guy who can just waltz into Chicago and make things work without much of a problem. Basically, he’ll just walk back into an organization that he already knows and just make things work without much of a bother. It’ll be easy and we all know it.

He is the guy who can come in and work with the offense without making it hard on anyone. There are better pieces there than there were when he was there the first time. The team runs first, he gets that, and he can make good throws. It’s not going to be a hard get for him to figure this one out.

No Thumbs Up For Cutler

by Patton on November 21, 2011

Win Some, Lose Some.
The Chicago Bears have been playing extremely well this season.  They’re the reason that the NFC North is the best division in football.  Jay Cutler has been on an even keel ALL season long, Matt Forte is killing it, and the defense still has plenty left in the tank.  Then, there’s the injury that has befallen Jay Cutler.
