Carolina Panthers

Is the owner of the Cincinnati Bengals, Mike Brown, smart enough to make a play for current Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart?

It is rumored that the Panthers are pursuing Michael Tolbert, the 5’9” 245 pound bowling ball of a running back from San Diego in free agency. The Coastal Carolina product would be a nice addition for Carolina, but do they need him? Looking at the Panthers’ current cap situation ($5.3M over) combined with the latest NFL draft trends, getting running backs cheaply, later in the draft, it would appear irresponsible of them to sign Tolbert and retain both DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart.

It’s not very often we chat about an Arena Football game.  Sure this is a football site and the sport as a whole is worthy of coverage.  However the Arena Football league to most of us seems below the bar.

That’s even though there are several former players and named entertainers that own teams and are involved in the sport.  For example, former NFL quarterbacks Bernie Kosar and John Elway used to own teams.  Jon Bon Jovi is an owner.

Now the stories are coming out of the Indoor Football League where the Allen Wranglers have the biggest name in the league, Terrell Owens.  And immediately Owens is paying off.

Big Game Sunday

by Deborah on December 11, 2011

Big games on tap today in the NFL, some with division implications and some are just big rivalries.

The Cowboys and Giants are on tap for Sunday night football. This game is big for both teams.  A divisional matchup and a chance for the Giants to make up some ground on the Cowboys.  The Giants will have Ahmad Bradshaw back for this game and hope to be able to run the ball against the Cowboys.  Currently in the NFC East the Cowboys are 7-5 and the Giants are 6-6.  The Cowboys have lost 1 and the Giants are on a 4 game losing streak coming off a heartbreaking loss to the Packers.  Definitely a big game.

No Thanks, NFC South

by Patton on December 6, 2011

Elsmere Avenue South

It's seems some teams are actually going south.

Remember when the NFC South was the best division in football? Saints winning, Falcons surging, Bucs surprising, and the Panthers about to get Cam Newton.

No longer. The Panthers suck because they have nobody around Newton. The Bucs cannot get back the magic, and the Falcons are just so-so.

I would say that I am not surprised, but I am. They should have three teams in the playoffs. Right? It makes sense that the teams that were good would stay good. Not in the south.

Texans in Panic Mode

by Greg Mitchell on November 29, 2011

Gary Kubiak will never admit it.  The words will never leave his lips.  However as much as he denies it, the Houston Texans are in trouble.  They are a team down to their third string quarterback and desperate as they search for their first playoff berth in team history.

Matt Leinart was getting the chance of his career.  It lasted almost a half hour.  Jacksonville’s Jeremy Mincey drove Leinart’s throwing shoulder into the ground after an incomplete pass Sunday.  That hit broke Leinart’s collarbone and ended his season.  In effect putting Kubiak and the Texans into panic mode.

This is another week for the NFL Top Ten, and is there any doubt who the number one team is?  Conventional wisdom tells you one team, and only one team deserves the honor going into week 5.  This is the week the byes begin.  6 teams have a bye but the rest of the teams are battling for a post season berth.

10.  Washington Redskins (3-1) – The Skins enter the Top Ten for the first time.  They are winning with hard hitting defense and a conservative offense led by Rex Grossman.  Mike Shanahan is showing how a well coached team with a lack of talent can win in the NFL.  This week they are off and getting a well deserved rest.

Cam For Real

by Patton on September 19, 2011

Cam the Ham
Cam Newton did something that NO ONE (probably including him) thought he could do.  Right before Tom Brady broke the record for most yards thrown in the first two games of a season, Cam Newton actually broke the record.

I don’t even care at this point if his team is losing because it is CLEARLY not on him.  He is doing everything he is asked to do, and far more.  He is the epitome of “getting it” before embarrassing himself on national TV.  He needs to no real help, he doesn’t have to wait to “get it”, and he’s leading his team as best he can.  This is where we can see that the team has other deficiencies that they have to deal with besides quarterback.  That problem is beyond solved.

This Is What Quarterbacks Are Worth

It matters.

The Colts got their butts kicked.  I think we now know what Peyton Manning is worth to them.  The pummeling that they took at the hands of the Texans was just pathetic to even read on a scoreboard ticker.  I mean, I can’t imagine a worse way to lose when your best player is sitting on the sidelines.  However, I think we can safely say that Peyton Manning has been the MVP basically his whole career.  Anybody else who got it was just getting it out of sheer nicety.  When Tom Brady was hurt, I don’t think it was ever this bad.

Bill Plaschke is a respected writer for the Los Angeles Times and a guest on “Around the Horn” on ESPN.  In his article about former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel Plaschke shows why.

Plaschke is in complete agreement with the NFL in suspending Tressel as an employee of the Indianapolis Colts.  That is certainly the consensus agreement among Ohio State “haters” around the country, so for Plaschke to go along is not surprising.  Plaschke even admits the league blew it when it comes to former USC coach Pete Carroll.

The most interesting of all divisions in the NFL for 2012 may be the NFC South.  It includes A Super Bowl champ from two seasons ago in the New Orleans Saints.  It includes the favorite for the Super Bowl entering the playoffs last year in the Atlanta FalconsTampa Bay is a former world champ and gathering talent to reach those heights again.  Plus we have the Carolina Panthers who are looking to rebound from last year’s lost season.
