NFL Draft

The Cleveland Browns may have jumped the gun on draft day, but you cannot argue with the fact they got the two players they most wanted in the draft.

That Thursday night before the first round of the NFL Draft the Browns traded several low round picks to move up one spot.  That move was made to ensure Cleveland could select the player they wanted the most, Trent Richardson of Alabama.  Later, the Browns selected with the 22nd pick in the first round, Brandon Weeden from Oklahoma State.  Both players participated in last week’s rookie mini camp in Berea.

The Buffalo Bills, for the first time in many years, have had an offseason filled with moves worthy of conversation.  The new approach for the Bills front office started last season when the Bills brought in veteran linebacker Nick Barnett, re-signed their best defensive lineman, at the time, Kyle Williams, and early this offseason re-signed their number one receiver, Stevie Johnson.  The Bills really made a huge and surprising splash when they signed highly sought after, free agent, Mario Williams to the most expensive defensive contract in NFL history.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has to be looking in the mirror wondering what he did to upset the football Gods.   Hall of Fame wide Receiver Art Monk is the latest in a long line of retired players to join in another lawsuit against the league.

We have discussed ad nauseum what Goodell hasn’t done to help those in need who placed the NFL on the map.  To make the NFL what it is today for him to become Commissioner with only one goal in mind, the 18 game season.

Two college quarterbacks with big names were left undrafted over the weekend.  Kellen Moore of Boise State and Case Keenum of Houston were outstanding in college, but their talents just don’t transfer into the pro game according to some scouts.  Yet because of their numbers both are being invited to training camp to try out for a spot on teams.

Keenum will stay close to home and sign on with the Houston Texans.  This may be more of a recognition signing by the Texans rather than a possible job with the club.  This does show a lot of good will by the team to a player that put Cougar football back on the map this season.

The Buffalo Bills had needs and holes on their team that needed to be accounted for.  Buddy Nix and the Bills front office knew what those needs were, and this offseason I would say they most definitely addressed them.

The Bills started the offseason with a bang, and although nothing done in the Bills draft has topped that excitement, as a organization they did what they needed to do.  It was business as usual for Buddy Nix, as he clearly had a certain mindset coming into this years draft and by all means did he stick with his plan.  He openly addressed the needs the Bills were looking to fill and round by round ensured fans that he was going to make sure that happened.

Usually the Ohio State Buckeyes are well represented in the NFL Draft.  It’s not odd for 3-4 players to be drafted in the first rounds, with others being taken later.  However this year, after a season in which unrest and inconsistency hampered the buckeyes, only 3 players were taken in the entire 253 picks.  Then two more signed on as free agents.

The first player selected was offensive lineman Michael Adams by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 56th pick overall.  Adams dropped into the second round because of his alleged positive drug test at the combine in Indianapolis.  This sent Adams to Pittsburgh to try and clear things up with the team he wanted to play for.

Well the NFL Draft is completed.  The Colts made a few splashes this year and made some moves that many people are very happy about.  Of course they drafted Andrew Luck first overall which is what everyone knew was going to happen.  The second round is where the first splash was made.

Going into the 2012 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers knew that they would need help on defense. The goal for the draft was to fill their needs on defensive line and the secondary. Once they solidified those needs then they could move on to bringing some depth to the offensive line and maybe a back-up receiver. With these goals in mind, the Chargers set out to draft the right pieces. They flew right under the radar of analysts and drafted the perfect pieces for the 2012 season.

For the first time in years, the Pittsburgh Steelers are at a crossroads in the off season.  The Steelers tried to gain youth in the draft across the offensive line with David DeCastro out of Stanford and Mike Adams from Ohio State.  Those picks will make quarterback Ben Roethlisberger happy, but what will make him even happier is re-signing receiver Mike Wallace.

Wallace is one of the premier pass catchers in the NFL, and the best on the Steelers, but his contract is up.  As a restricted free agent, Wallace really has no options.   If a team wanted to sign him prior to the draft would have to give up a first round pick to the Steelers in order to do so.  That didn’t happen.

Luck and Mr. Irrelevent

by Greg Mitchell on April 29, 2012

Indianapolis performed a rarity this weekend at the NFL 2012 Draft.  Not only did they select a quarterback with the first pick, but they ended the draft on Saturday by selecting a signal caller with the last selection.

Andrew Luck was the first player drafted and will be the Colts quarterback for the upcoming 2012 NFL season.  With that there is little doubt.  However the final pick was Northern Illinois QB Chandler Harnish, earning the title “Mr. Irrelevant.”
