Texas A&M

Hot Stocks

by Deborah on April 7, 2012

Now that the Pro Days are all but over, some NFL hopefuls stocks are on the rise.  Let’s take a look at some hot performers and fast risers ahead of the upcoming NFL Draft.

Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama – Richardson had an outstanding Pro Day surprising a lot of people when he ran a 4.8 and had 25 reps on the bench.  He made some great catches and looked very comfortable during the entire exercise.  He has both quickness and explosive speed as well as the ability to pass protect.

So the Miami Dolphin fans are in an uproar.  Stephen Ross bought the team over a year ago promising big things.  Yet the big things have gone elsewhere and the fans are growing restless.

First the team released Chad Henne.  The Michigan product had one good season as the quarterback of the Dolphins, but then never fulfilled what he showed.  Mark him gone to the team up North, Jacksonville.

Then came the Peyton Manning negotiations.  Or rather, lack of negotiations.  Miami was expected to be a destination for Manning.  After all it made sense that Manning would want a warm weather climate for his ailing neck.  Yet he chose a cold weather city in Denver.  So again, the Dolphins were left wanting.

College football conference jumping is close to being over.  The Big 12 is losing two members but gaining a field full of money for it.

$24.8 Million.  That is the combination Texas A & M, along with Missouri, will pay the Big 12 for the honor of leaving the conference and joining the SEC next year.  The agreement will allow the two schools out in July.

Along with leaving the conference, Texas A&M will receive unspecified benefits from the Big 12′s new television contract with Fox Sports and other interests.  Missouri waived any claims from the TV deal, which takes effect in July, and will pay the Big 12 another $500,000 to cover expenses for the past season’s officiating.

Could the NCAA be close to a playoff system for college football?

Believe it or not it appears that might just be the case.  The BCS is looking at all scenarios and the 4 team playoffs system seems to be getting the most talk.  This would mean the top 4 teams in the country, this year that would have meant LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma State would have been in the playoff.  There would have been a fight between Oregon and Stanford for the final spot.

Not very often as writers are we given the opportunity to prove an opinion we have off the field is correct.  But then the fields of college football and politics don’t cross often.  In this case the culprit crossing lines is Craig James.  Again James, as in the past 30 years, is trying to pull the wool over America’s eyes.

It was written in December the former SMU running back and current ESPN college football commentator was contemplating a run for the U.S. Senate in Texas.  He stated he would run for the office vacated by the retirement of Kay Bailey Hutchison.  At that time we stated “Congress needs another member with a trail of troubles who doesn’t understand reality.”

We all can agree it is time for change in this country.  Not only in our sports leagues, but in our government.  We have seen athletes turn their popularity into government service before.  Jim Bouton, Heath Schuler, Bill Bradley and J. C. Watts just to name a few.  Now we have another ready to throw his hat into the ring.

Craig James has announced his plans to run for the Unites States Senate in the state of Texas.  He will run for the seat vacated by Kay Bailey Hutchison, who is retiring at the end of her current term.  That’s nice.  Congress needs another member with a trail of troubles who doesn’t understand reality.

Kansas Errs in Weis Hiring

by Greg Mitchell on December 10, 2011

Charlie Weis is the new Kansas coach.  Yes the same Charlie Weis fans in South bend couldn’t wait to get rid of.  Kansas has now gone from the ridiculous to the sublime in one week.

Athletic Director Sheahon Zenger announced Friday night Weis agreed to a five-year, $12.5 million contract.  An unbelievable deal for a coach who hasn’t proven he can be a head coach.  With this contract, Weis is the third highest paid coach in the Big 12 behind Mack Brown of Texas and Bob Stoops of Oklahoma.  Weis will make more than Mike Gundy.  Zenger must be drinking the Notre Dame Kool Aid!

This is the year BCS opponents have been waiting for.  With the results from the past weekend, there is complete confusion in the BCS and the standings.  Nothing is in concrete as of yet and even Virginia Tech has a shot at the National Championship.

With all due respect to the Hokies program, they have no business being in the conversation for a National Championship.   If you place the Hokies into the conversation, then Boise State still should have a shot.  Both have one loss, but the Broncos have beaten a tough Georgia team.  The Holies haven’t come close to a win over a school of that caliber.  Plus VT struggled with North Carolina on Saturday.

This is “THE” week.  According to the AP rankings, Number one LSU will play Number Two Alabama.  Of course that is not the way we see it.  Boise still has the top spot here and deservedly so.  However this should be a great matchup Saturday night in Tuscaloosa.    The winner will have the upper hand in the BCS rankings and the loser still hanging on.  It’s what College Football is all about.  However for now, let’s examine this week’s College Football Top Twenty.

  1. Boise State (7-0) – The Broncos were off last week.  Giving them two weeks to prepare for a road test at UNLV.

Now that West Virginia has been invited to join the Big 12, overcoming political pressure from Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, it remains to be seen if they can make the move.  Their biggest obstacle might be the Big East.

West Virginia has filed a lawsuit hoping to leave the Big East immediately so it can become a member of the Big 12 before the 2012 football season.  The Big East said it planned to hold the Mountaineers to a provision in the conference bylaws that requires notice of 27 months before a school can withdraw.
