Tennessee

It’s amazing how one signing can change the direction of a division so suddenly.   With all the fanfare of a hero coming home, Peyton Manning was introduced yesterday to the Denver Broncos media and fans, thus showing the rest of the division things have changed in the ole West.

Let’s start with the Oakland Raiders.  First round picks for quarterback Carson palmer last year was supposed to give the Raiders the division title and a pass into the AFC Title game for the next few years to come.  But a new owner, new general manager and a new coach changed the face of this team for the first time in 50 years.  Now the Raiders will approach things with the NFL thinking, rather than the “maverick” ideas from Al Davis that led to the Raiders being a premier franchise for years.

It was a sad announcement to watch.  Not very often do Icons leave their teams on good footing, but Peyton Manning and Indianapolis Colts Owner Jim Irsay showed it can be done.

For a team releasing its franchise player for the last 14 years, Jim Irsay did it with class and finesse.  As Irsay explained, Manning joined the Colts as a 22 year old kid from Tennessee when he was a 37 year old newly appointed team owner of the Colts.  Together they grew up in their respected jobs and blossomed with each other.

Going into Sunday night, a little known, little heard of documentary based upon a high school football team in Memphis was up for the Oscar on Best Documentary.  Oscar or no, this documentary shows that team has already won.

The documentary is named “Undefeated” and documents the extraordinary concern and passion of a white football coach for his team of African-American players, whose chaotic personal lives threaten to undermine their talents.  It reflects an entire season and how they deal with everything that comes between them and the game.

Over two years ago, a pair of SEC coaches were at each other’s throats.  Now things have changed so much they not only are no longer in the SEC, but they seem to be working together.

Those two coaches are Ohio State’s Urban Meyer and USC’s Lane Kiffin.  Kiffin was in his only season as head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers.  Meanwhile Urban Meyer’s Florida Gators were coming off their second National Championship in the last three seasons.

Speculation continues to run amuck around the corners of the NFL on where Peyton Manning will end up next year.  Never has the NFL seen this kind of frenzy over a single player.

The media is constantly speculating and asking the same questions over and over.  Will Manning remain with the Colts or can he actually leave for another team?  Ordinarily a quarterback of this stature would not be going anywhere.  However there are 28 million reasons why the Colts will let Manning leave the only franchise he has known.

Could the NCAA be close to a playoff system for college football?

Believe it or not it appears that might just be the case.  The BCS is looking at all scenarios and the 4 team playoffs system seems to be getting the most talk.  This would mean the top 4 teams in the country, this year that would have meant LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma State would have been in the playoff.  There would have been a fight between Oregon and Stanford for the final spot.

Reports Say Manning Done

by Greg Mitchell on January 31, 2012

It might be over.  While brother Eli is going for the Manning family’s third Super Bowl championship in Peyton’s city, Yahoo Sports is reporting today the elder Manning’s career is over.

Sources are saying the neck surgery isn’t healing correctly and Peyton cannot take the chance of returning.  Many don’t know Manning started throwing again in December.  The surgically repaired vertebrae have healed well enough for that process to begin.  However according to the sources, the nerve damage is such that his velocity hasn’t improved.  The fear is it won’t return.

March 8.  That is the date.  The date the Indianapolis Colts will either stay the course or change the direction of their franchise forever.

March 8th is the date the Colts are to issue a check for 28 Million dollars to quarterback Peyton Manning.  That check represents not only the Colts respecting the past and what Manning has done for the franchise, but also the future and what he can do for the club.  But with that check, can Indy also do what they say and draft Andrew Luck number one this April and let him sit for up to three years Manning says he can play?

The worst kept secret is now a reality.  Retirement is in the mirror and so is Florida.  Urban Meyer is returning to college football and he’s going to Ohio State.

This was rumored last week, but Meyer obviously denied every report.  Not wanting to step on the tradition of the Ohio State-Michigan game.  But the rumors grew in credibility as the week wore on and not even the denials were believable any longer.

Expect an announcement sometime Monday or Tuesday, and then he will be introduced Tuesday night at halftime of the Ohio State-Duke men’s basketball game in Columbus.  The same entrance Jim Tressel got when he took the job almost ten years ago.

This is “THE” week.  According to the AP rankings, Number one LSU will play Number Two Alabama.  Of course that is not the way we see it.  Boise still has the top spot here and deservedly so.  However this should be a great matchup Saturday night in Tuscaloosa.    The winner will have the upper hand in the BCS rankings and the loser still hanging on.  It’s what College Football is all about.  However for now, let’s examine this week’s College Football Top Twenty.

  1. Boise State (7-0) – The Broncos were off last week.  Giving them two weeks to prepare for a road test at UNLV.
