Draft Day 2012.  The day all Cleveland Browns fans call their “Super Bowl” day.  That’s because in past years all they have had to look forward to is the draft.  But this year is required to be different than all others.

Browns fans find themselves restless, almost paranoid.  That coming from one playoff performance since their return to the league in 1999.  This is a drought most older fans haven’t been through before, and younger fans don’t know what it is like to watch winning football.  But even worse, for most fans to remember a good and exciting team, they have to hearken back to the days of Art Modell, and that is a painful memory.

Months of debate, discussion, examination.  Thursday evening the NFL will put all that to rest as they hold their annual College Football Draft in New York.  Excitement is predicted with surprises galore.

There is no secret in the first two picks.  Up until Monday there was no drama in the first three picks.  Now Minnesota, with the third pick, is wavering on Matt Kahil, the tackle out of USC.  In fact there are talks St. Louis might be interested in moving up to pick Alabama’s Trent Richardson.

BCS Changes Coming?

by Greg Mitchell on April 20, 2012

Are changes coming to the BCS?  If you listen to Bill Hancock, the Executive Director of the BCS, caution is the word.

Hancock says they look over the system every four years, and that is what they are doing now.  But nothing has been, nor will it be soon, decided.  Practically everything is on the table, from the format to who can automatically qualify to play in the BCS.

So far the proposals for the next cycle, which begins in 2014, range from minor adjustments to the current system to a four-team playoff plus eight other BCS games that may have no direct impact on the championship.  Former coach and Hall of Famer Lou Holtz is definite in his opinion for changes to the BCS.

Hot Stocks

by Deborah on April 7, 2012

Now that the Pro Days are all but over, some NFL hopefuls stocks are on the rise.  Let’s take a look at some hot performers and fast risers ahead of the upcoming NFL Draft.

Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama – Richardson had an outstanding Pro Day surprising a lot of people when he ran a 4.8 and had 25 reps on the bench.  He made some great catches and looked very comfortable during the entire exercise.  He has both quickness and explosive speed as well as the ability to pass protect.

Could the NCAA be close to a playoff system for college football?

Believe it or not it appears that might just be the case.  The BCS is looking at all scenarios and the 4 team playoffs system seems to be getting the most talk.  This would mean the top 4 teams in the country, this year that would have meant LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma State would have been in the playoff.  There would have been a fight between Oregon and Stanford for the final spot.

The worst kept secret is now a reality.  Retirement is in the mirror and so is Florida.  Urban Meyer is returning to college football and he’s going to Ohio State.

This was rumored last week, but Meyer obviously denied every report.  Not wanting to step on the tradition of the Ohio State-Michigan game.  But the rumors grew in credibility as the week wore on and not even the denials were believable any longer.

Expect an announcement sometime Monday or Tuesday, and then he will be introduced Tuesday night at halftime of the Ohio State-Duke men’s basketball game in Columbus.  The same entrance Jim Tressel got when he took the job almost ten years ago.

Rivalry Weekend

by Deborah on November 25, 2011

Another big rivalry weekend is upon us and there are some great matchups on tap for Saturday football.

Georgia gets a preview of the big game in the Georgia Dome coming in the SEC Championship when they go to the Dome to play Georgia Tech.  The longstanding rivalry matches the #13 ranked Bulldogs against the #23 ranked Yellow Jackets.  Families all across Georgia will be split between the two watching the game.  Georgia has an opportunity to get a win and carry that momentum into next week’s showdown in the dome most likely against LSU.

This is “THE” week.  According to the AP rankings, Number one LSU will play Number Two Alabama.  Of course that is not the way we see it.  Boise still has the top spot here and deservedly so.  However this should be a great matchup Saturday night in Tuscaloosa.    The winner will have the upper hand in the BCS rankings and the loser still hanging on.  It’s what College Football is all about.  However for now, let’s examine this week’s College Football Top Twenty.

  1. Boise State (7-0) – The Broncos were off last week.  Giving them two weeks to prepare for a road test at UNLV.

Now that West Virginia has been invited to join the Big 12, overcoming political pressure from Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, it remains to be seen if they can make the move.  Their biggest obstacle might be the Big East.

West Virginia has filed a lawsuit hoping to leave the Big East immediately so it can become a member of the Big 12 before the 2012 football season.  The Big East said it planned to hold the Mountaineers to a provision in the conference bylaws that requires notice of 27 months before a school can withdraw.

It has happened…Again.  While everyone was clamoring Oklahoma as the best team in the country from the beginning, we stood-fast saying “No”.   The Sooners are an enticing, enjoyable team to watch.  But they always find a way to lose, just like Saturday night.  A late rally couldn’t save them and now they play spoiler for the rest of the season.  Meanwhile in our Top 20 college football rankings, the top teams stay the same.
