Penn State

With all the bad press Penn State University has received over the past year, you would think the school would actually want to instill good faith.  However in the past week they have shown its business as usual.

The school apparently only understands how to take steps not to be sued.  This is carrying over to the so called “honorary” naming of the University Stadium.  Something the school is trying to accomplish while getting a release signed by the Paterno family exonerating Penn State of any wrongdoing in the Paterno firing.

Wisconsin At It Again

by Greg Mitchell on March 29, 2012

Wisconsin is at it again.  Bringing in a quarterback from another school worked so well for the Badgers in 2011 they have gone that route in 2012.  Maryland QB Danny O’Brien has announced he will transfer to the cheese state and finish out the final two years of his college career.

Let’s look at the process O’Brien has taken to make it to Madison.  He left Maryland to travel to Australia and enroll in a University there to finish up his degree and graduate.  Graduating is the key to his plan.  The NCAA rule states if you graduate from your enrolled school, yet that school doesn’t have a Master’s program in your field, the player is allowed to transfer to a school that does and is immediately eligible.

For only the Fourth time since Woody Hayes was fired in 1978, the Ohio State Buckeyes are opening spring football drills with a new head coach.   Other than Penn State, this might be the hallmark from which other schools have to compare.

After Woody came Earle Bruce, John Cooper, Jim Tressel and now Urban Meyer.  All, except for Cooper, had ties to the University.  Tressel and Meyer were graduate assistants under Bruce in the 80’s.  Bruce was a grad assistant and full time assistant under Hayes.  Cooper came to OSU from after taking Arizona State to the Rose Bowl and came out a winner.

Is the Bill O’Brien party at Penn State beginning, or ending before it begins?

Court documents in the Jerry Sandusky case continue to be released.  More and more this case grows as more victims are being found and charges are brought against the former Penn State Defensive Coordinator.

Not only has the prosecution found more victims, aging in the range of 8-17.  They also have found more evidence this case spanned several years and several states.  It seems this happened not only in Pennsylvania, but also in Florida and Texas.  According to court documents, one student was abused in his own school.

Nationally renowned recruiting expert Tom Lemming has been on the road for two months and wherever he goes these days, he hears the same thing:

“As I travel the country,” Lemming said, “Penn State’s name is popping up everywhere, more than it did in the past.”

Lemming has been scouting and evaluating high school football players since 1978, so when the says in the past, he means in the last 30 years!

Lemming, who writes the widely read Prep Football Report, considered by many the Bible of college football recruiting, is impressed with the way Bill O’Brien is tackling recruiting.

The NCAA has finally stepped up and announced that Oregon has allegedly violated recruiting rules by the way it used recruiting services over the past 4 years.  What’s interesting about this is the coverage Oregon and Miami have received during their incidents.

Virtually none.

It has been almost one year since Miami was accused of receiving illegal payments from a convicted felon.  Yet the media, specifically ESPN, has said almost nothing about the violations.

The NCAA has been looking into Oregon’s recruiting practices since questions arose over a 2010 payment of $25,000 to Willie Lyles and his Houston-based recruiting service. Lyles had a relationship with a player from Texas who committed to Oregon.  Yet again, we have heard almost nothing.

Could the NCAA be close to a playoff system for college football?

Believe it or not it appears that might just be the case.  The BCS is looking at all scenarios and the 4 team playoffs system seems to be getting the most talk.  This would mean the top 4 teams in the country, this year that would have meant LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma State would have been in the playoff.  There would have been a fight between Oregon and Stanford for the final spot.

When Tom Brady’s Hail Mary pass in the Super Bowl fell incomplete Sunday night, Bill O’Brien’s role as Patriots offensive coordinator ended and he could begin to turn his full attention to running the Penn State football program.

That is not to say that Bill O’Brien has not already started to make his mark on the program even from afar.

There have been some subtle changes; mustaches and beards are now OK, as are hats inside the building, a no-no from the Paterno regime and some not so subtle ones.

The first recruiting class of Bill O’Brien is now in the books as 19 players today signed National Letters of Intent to attend Penn Stare. The class includes 10 offensive players and nine defensive players.

With the passing of Joe Paterno early Sunday morning, many players and associates are expressing their condolences to the family.  As many know these thoughts and prayers do mean a lot to the grieving family.  However the world could do without one statement from a former coach.

It must be said anyone accused of a crime is innocent until proven guilty.  That is the standard our Country lives by and expects.  Sometimes that idea is hard to abide to, but it must be done.  That being said, would someone tell Jerry Sandusky his statement of condolence to the Paterno family rings hollow considering what is going on.
