Nebraska

In the American political climate today, we are expected to pick our fights with painstaking thought.  Evidently that memo was lost on Nebraska assistant football coach Ron Brown.

Brown rejoined the Nebraska coaching staff in 2008 and enters his fifth season on Bo Pelini’s staff in 2012.  Brown is responsible for the running backs on the Cornhusker staff.  However avoiding hits must be something Brown isn’t teaching, because lately he has taken many.

College football conference jumping is close to being over.  The Big 12 is losing two members but gaining a field full of money for it.

$24.8 Million.  That is the combination Texas A & M, along with Missouri, will pay the Big 12 for the honor of leaving the conference and joining the SEC next year.  The agreement will allow the two schools out in July.

Along with leaving the conference, Texas A&M will receive unspecified benefits from the Big 12′s new television contract with Fox Sports and other interests.  Missouri waived any claims from the TV deal, which takes effect in July, and will pay the Big 12 another $500,000 to cover expenses for the past season’s officiating.

Could the NCAA be close to a playoff system for college football?

Believe it or not it appears that might just be the case.  The BCS is looking at all scenarios and the 4 team playoffs system seems to be getting the most talk.  This would mean the top 4 teams in the country, this year that would have meant LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma State would have been in the playoff.  There would have been a fight between Oregon and Stanford for the final spot.

Wednesday is National Letter of Intent signing day for college football.  The University of Texas has been ranked with the Number One recruiting class this year.

This should come as no surprise to people outside of Texas.  This is the best class a Television network can produce.  The Texas Longhorn network has been funded by ESPN, blessed by the NCAA and upset an entire conference.  It has led to Texas A & M and Missouri leaving the Big 12.

Joe Paterno has spoken.  And the words are ringing hollow.

The former Head Football coach at Penn State did an interview with renowned writer Sally Jenkins of the Washington Post.  To say he didn’t come across as a man reeling in guilt over his lack of action is an understatement.

Paterno showed disregard for everything involved in the Sandusky incident.  No remorse or concern for the child.  All he seemed to care about was making sure the university wasn’t involved in something he didn’t understand.  His actions after he was informed by assistant coach Mike McQueary of what he saw Sandusky doing to a child were more than reprehensible.

The debacle Monday night the BCS tried to pass off as a National Championship game has everyone involved abuzz.  Changes are coming, finally.  And those changes seem to have the blessing of NCAA President Mark Emmert.

This might be the first time the NCAA, or anyone associated with it, have expressed approval in public to a possible playoff system.  Emmert came out Thursday and said he would be pleased with a four team playoff, as long as it would not grow.

Kansas Errs in Weis Hiring

by Greg Mitchell on December 10, 2011

Charlie Weis is the new Kansas coach.  Yes the same Charlie Weis fans in South bend couldn’t wait to get rid of.  Kansas has now gone from the ridiculous to the sublime in one week.

Athletic Director Sheahon Zenger announced Friday night Weis agreed to a five-year, $12.5 million contract.  An unbelievable deal for a coach who hasn’t proven he can be a head coach.  With this contract, Weis is the third highest paid coach in the Big 12 behind Mack Brown of Texas and Bob Stoops of Oklahoma.  Weis will make more than Mike Gundy.  Zenger must be drinking the Notre Dame Kool Aid!

Illinois Finds New Coach

by Greg Mitchell on December 9, 2011

After firing Ron Zook, who’s from the state of Ohio originally, it appears Illinois will go back to the Buckeye state for their next coach.  Toledo coach Tim Beckman will reportedly take the Illini job.

It not surprising Beckman would take a new job.  He was silently a hot commodity around the college football world.  Beckman’s team never won a MAC title, but the Rockets were the team others had to go through to win the league.

Beckman didn’t turn the MAC on its ear with his record.  In his three years with the Rockets, Beckman turned in a 21-16 record.  But his style of play kept interest in Toledo and their fans in a state of excitement.

The worst kept secret is now a reality.  Retirement is in the mirror and so is Florida.  Urban Meyer is returning to college football and he’s going to Ohio State.

This was rumored last week, but Meyer obviously denied every report.  Not wanting to step on the tradition of the Ohio State-Michigan game.  But the rumors grew in credibility as the week wore on and not even the denials were believable any longer.

Expect an announcement sometime Monday or Tuesday, and then he will be introduced Tuesday night at halftime of the Ohio State-Duke men’s basketball game in Columbus.  The same entrance Jim Tressel got when he took the job almost ten years ago.

It seems like it was just a matter of time.  Ron Zook may have known it was coming at his press conference this week.  But Sunday Illinois made it official in firing their head coach.

Zook may have had a chance before Saturday’s loss to the worst team in the Big Ten, Minnesota 27-7.  The Illini started the season 6-0 and were a team thought to be in contention for the conference championship.  Then the losses started mounting.
