If you listen closely you can hear that low rumble that is coming from Detroit. The one that says the Lions are ready to be taken seriously. Not the little engine that could, but the lion that could eat you for dinner.
The Lions made some noise in the first round of this year’s draft when at 22 they took OT Riley Reiff out of Iowa. Reiff is not just a big tackle, he’s a HUGE tackle. He is 6′ 6″ and weighs in at 313 pounds. Reiff was brought in for one reason and one reason only, to protect Matthew Stafford. He will likely start on the right side but then will probably move to the left as time progresses. Reiff started every game at Iowa and proved very durable in a run heavy offense. He’s very smart and will likely adapt very well to NFL speed and playbooks. A definite roar for the Lions.

Could the NCAA be close to a playoff system for college football?
Believe it or not it appears that might just be the case. The BCS is looking at all scenarios and the 4 team playoffs system seems to be getting the most talk. This would mean the top 4 teams in the country, this year that would have meant LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma State would have been in the playoff. There would have been a fight between Oregon and Stanford for the final spot.

So Bret Bielma is upset at Ohio State coach Urban Meyer for allegedly “cheating” while recruiting. Bielema has a very picky definition of cheating.
According to Bielema, Meyer violated an unwritten rule in the Big Ten whereby coaches stop recruiting players if they commit to other conference schools. He called it a “gentleman’s agreement.” Mark Dantonio says he had a similar agreement with former OSU coach Jim Tressel. Bielema was so upset about Meyer’s actions he contacted Big Ten commissioner Jim Delaney. Dantonio believes Meyer’s actions are “unethical.”

Not unexpectedly, Mike Stoops has returned to Oklahoma.
After a dalliance with Arizona as Head Coach, Stoops will go to work for his brother Bob with the Sooners. Mike will be the defensive coordinator and earn over $600,000 a year for the next three years.
This move was approved by the Oklahoma Board of Regents. As part of Stoops’ deal, the regents voted to approve a nepotism waiver because he will be working with his brother. As part of the contract, Mike Stoops stands to get another $50,000 if he stays with the Sooners through spring practice in May 2013 and again if he stays through May 2014.

Joe Paterno has spoken. And the words are ringing hollow.
The former Head Football coach at Penn State did an interview with renowned writer Sally Jenkins of the Washington Post. To say he didn’t come across as a man reeling in guilt over his lack of action is an understatement.
Paterno showed disregard for everything involved in the Sandusky incident. No remorse or concern for the child. All he seemed to care about was making sure the university wasn’t involved in something he didn’t understand. His actions after he was informed by assistant coach Mike McQueary of what he saw Sandusky doing to a child were more than reprehensible.

After firing Ron Zook, who’s from the state of Ohio originally, it appears Illinois will go back to the Buckeye state for their next coach. Toledo coach Tim Beckman will reportedly take the Illini job.
It not surprising Beckman would take a new job. He was silently a hot commodity around the college football world. Beckman’s team never won a MAC title, but the Rockets were the team others had to go through to win the league.
Beckman didn’t turn the MAC on its ear with his record. In his three years with the Rockets, Beckman turned in a 21-16 record. But his style of play kept interest in Toledo and their fans in a state of excitement.

The worst kept secret is now a reality. Retirement is in the mirror and so is Florida. Urban Meyer is returning to college football and he’s going to Ohio State.
This was rumored last week, but Meyer obviously denied every report. Not wanting to step on the tradition of the Ohio State-Michigan game. But the rumors grew in credibility as the week wore on and not even the denials were believable any longer.
Expect an announcement sometime Monday or Tuesday, and then he will be introduced Tuesday night at halftime of the Ohio State-Duke men’s basketball game in Columbus. The same entrance Jim Tressel got when he took the job almost ten years ago.

It seems like it was just a matter of time. Ron Zook may have known it was coming at his press conference this week. But Sunday Illinois made it official in firing their head coach.
Zook may have had a chance before Saturday’s loss to the worst team in the Big Ten, Minnesota 27-7. The Illini started the season 6-0 and were a team thought to be in contention for the conference championship. Then the losses started mounting.

Let’s get this out of the way right now. The Ohio State football coaching position is the most prestigious and coveted job in football today.
There is no other job in college football that brings with it the pressure and tradition. In addition, there is not a coach in America that would turn down the job if it were offered. Not every coach will go after it because they can’t handle the pressure of Columbus and they have it easy where they are today. Ask Kirk Herbstreit. At Ohio State, fans expect Big Ten titles and National Championships.
