It’s Just Business

by Deborah on February 12, 2012

The NFL has long been about business.  In recent years, it is more about business than it is about football and definitely more about business than it is about the fans.  Steeler fans are probably about to find that out.

It is being reported widely now that the Steelers plan to cut wide receiver and fan favorite Hines Ward.  The Steelers are in the midst of restructuring multiple players contracts in order to get below the salary cap.  Ward is scheduled to make $4 million in 2012 and is coming off ankle surgery.

Could the NCAA be close to a playoff system for college football?

Believe it or not it appears that might just be the case.  The BCS is looking at all scenarios and the 4 team playoffs system seems to be getting the most talk.  This would mean the top 4 teams in the country, this year that would have meant LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma State would have been in the playoff.  There would have been a fight between Oregon and Stanford for the final spot.

The Classiest NCAA Violation Ever

by Patton on December 21, 2011

Everyone who posted this to Facebook said they liked that it was a classy violation.  Now, of course, all of these people were UGA homers, but I had to read the original article anyways.

Mark Richt was paying his assistant coaches from his own money for things like bonuses, longevity bonuses, and salary reductions from a change in jobs.  It is, in fact, the classiest violation in the history of everything.  You know what I love even more than that, the NCAA actually thinks this is a bad thing.

And Then There Were 35

by Deborah on December 10, 2011

A week before the first bowl game kicks off, we realize just how ridiculous yet again the BCS system is.  There are 35 bowl games.  THIRTY-FIVE.  The quest for money is in full display and the quest to find out what team is truly best in the nation falls by the wayside yet again.

BCS Bowl Projections

by Deborah on December 4, 2011

The BCS bowl projections got a little more difficult last night when Oklahoma State thrashed Oklahoma.  It now all depends on how the final BCS standings shake out.  Will it be Alabama at 2 or Oklahoma State?

If Alabama ends up ranked 2, they will of course face LSU in the BCS title game.  If Oklahoma State ends up at 2, they will be in the title game vs LSU and Alabama will probably play Michigan in the Sugar Bowl.

Good Dawgs

by Deborah on December 4, 2011

The Georgia Bulldogs didn’t end the season on the note that fans would have wanted, but they did end the season with a winning record, and a good one at that.

At the beginning of the season, it looked for all the world like Mark Richt was headed out of Georgia.  The media certainly had him with one foot out the door based on last season’s poor showing.  The team started off against Boise State and promptly lost the game.  This gave rise to even more articles predicting Richt’s demise and gave Boise State even more “artificially” created credibility.  Georgia was already on the ropes according to many.

The SEC title game is today.  We’ve been waiting.  We’ve been waiting to see if LSU can lose.  They beat Arkansas, they beat Alabama, and now they get a crack at the Dawgs, but can the Dawgs actually pull the upset?

It seems that everyone thinks the Georgia team is built to beat the Tigers.  Even though this Georgia offense is not spectacular, they could be running a lot and avoiding the insane defensive backfield of LSU.  So, I suppose that it is possible that the Dawgs might have a shot.

The worst kept secret is now a reality.  Retirement is in the mirror and so is Florida.  Urban Meyer is returning to college football and he’s going to Ohio State.

This was rumored last week, but Meyer obviously denied every report.  Not wanting to step on the tradition of the Ohio State-Michigan game.  But the rumors grew in credibility as the week wore on and not even the denials were believable any longer.

Expect an announcement sometime Monday or Tuesday, and then he will be introduced Tuesday night at halftime of the Ohio State-Duke men’s basketball game in Columbus.  The same entrance Jim Tressel got when he took the job almost ten years ago.

For all intents and purposes, the college football regular season is over.  LSU will face off with Alabama for the National championship in January.  There is plenty of dissent as to if this rematch should happen.

Depending on who you listen to, the first game was a boring, unimaginative affair between two teams that didn’t belong.  Others say it was a classic and warrants another viewing.  It’s obvious after this season college football needs a playoff system, however it is widely known University Presidents will never approve that.

Rivalry Weekend

by Deborah on November 25, 2011

Another big rivalry weekend is upon us and there are some great matchups on tap for Saturday football.

Georgia gets a preview of the big game in the Georgia Dome coming in the SEC Championship when they go to the Dome to play Georgia Tech.  The longstanding rivalry matches the #13 ranked Bulldogs against the #23 ranked Yellow Jackets.  Families all across Georgia will be split between the two watching the game.  Georgia has an opportunity to get a win and carry that momentum into next week’s showdown in the dome most likely against LSU.
