Could the NCAA be close to a playoff system for college football?

Believe it or not it appears that might just be the case.  The BCS is looking at all scenarios and the 4 team playoffs system seems to be getting the most talk.  This would mean the top 4 teams in the country, this year that would have meant LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma State would have been in the playoff.  There would have been a fight between Oregon and Stanford for the final spot.

The debacle Monday night the BCS tried to pass off as a National Championship game has everyone involved abuzz.  Changes are coming, finally.  And those changes seem to have the blessing of NCAA President Mark Emmert.

This might be the first time the NCAA, or anyone associated with it, have expressed approval in public to a possible playoff system.  Emmert came out Thursday and said he would be pleased with a four team playoff, as long as it would not grow.

The worst kept secret is now a reality.  Retirement is in the mirror and so is Florida.  Urban Meyer is returning to college football and he’s going to Ohio State.

This was rumored last week, but Meyer obviously denied every report.  Not wanting to step on the tradition of the Ohio State-Michigan game.  But the rumors grew in credibility as the week wore on and not even the denials were believable any longer.

Expect an announcement sometime Monday or Tuesday, and then he will be introduced Tuesday night at halftime of the Ohio State-Duke men’s basketball game in Columbus.  The same entrance Jim Tressel got when he took the job almost ten years ago.

Three of the best and last college football rivalries will kick off Saturday.  6 arch rivals that are staying put in their conferences and placing loyalty to their fans and traditions above money.

The “Iron Bowl”, as it is called, has Alabama taking on Auburn in a classic rivalry.  Not only do the teams have the infamous “tree” incident to motivate them, but also last year’s game.  Last season the Tide had a big lead over unbeaten Auburn, but Cam Newton put on an amazing show to pull out the game and a shot at the National Championship.

Rivalry Weekend

by Deborah on November 25, 2011

Another big rivalry weekend is upon us and there are some great matchups on tap for Saturday football.

Georgia gets a preview of the big game in the Georgia Dome coming in the SEC Championship when they go to the Dome to play Georgia Tech.  The longstanding rivalry matches the #13 ranked Bulldogs against the #23 ranked Yellow Jackets.  Families all across Georgia will be split between the two watching the game.  Georgia has an opportunity to get a win and carry that momentum into next week’s showdown in the dome most likely against LSU.

This is the year BCS opponents have been waiting for.  With the results from the past weekend, there is complete confusion in the BCS and the standings.  Nothing is in concrete as of yet and even Virginia Tech has a shot at the National Championship.

With all due respect to the Hokies program, they have no business being in the conversation for a National Championship.   If you place the Hokies into the conversation, then Boise State still should have a shot.  Both have one loss, but the Broncos have beaten a tough Georgia team.  The Holies haven’t come close to a win over a school of that caliber.  Plus VT struggled with North Carolina on Saturday.

Ranked vs Ranked

by Deborah on November 11, 2011

There are only 3 ranked vs ranked matchups in the FBS this weekend.  One could determine who plays for the SEC Championship.  One is surrounded by one of the biggest sports/crime stories ever.  One will have a lot of NFL eyes on it watching the possible #1 overall draft prize for next year.

SEC Showdown

by Deborah on November 11, 2011

A showdown is on tap in the SEC this weekend.  Between the hedges, #14 Georgia will face #20 Auburn in what could determine who plays for the SEC Championship.

Georgia could find itself in the SEC Championship game in two ways.  Georgia can clinch the East with wins in its final two SEC games, including a matchup with Kentucky next weekend. If the Gamecocks lose to the Gators, the Bulldogs would clinch by beating Auburn.

Now that West Virginia has been invited to join the Big 12, overcoming political pressure from Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, it remains to be seen if they can make the move.  Their biggest obstacle might be the Big East.

West Virginia has filed a lawsuit hoping to leave the Big East immediately so it can become a member of the Big 12 before the 2012 football season.  The Big East said it planned to hold the Mountaineers to a provision in the conference bylaws that requires notice of 27 months before a school can withdraw.

College Football Big Matchups

by Deborah on October 21, 2011

This weekend there are a few ranked/ranked matchups in college football.   One looks like a blowout.  One used to look like a blowout.  And one is a toss up.

The first one is of course #25 Washington at #8 Stanford.  By all accounts, this game should be all Stanford.  Andrew Luck should add even more stats to his already impressive college resume making all those less than successful NFL teams so far this season want him even more.  Luck should have a big game against Washington and Stanford should move to 7-0 on the year without too much trouble.
