Burress = Giants Savior?

Some players on the New York Giants football team believe that getting Plaxico Burress back is the answer to the Giants prayers.  I am sure there are others who do not feel the same way.  Burress will be released from prison on June 6th and he and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, want him to get back into the NFL.

Burress, who has served 21 months on gun related charges, is now 33 years old.  He will be 34 in August.  He has not played in the NFL for 2 years.  Even though his agent claims he has stayed in excellent shape, the fact remains, he has not played a single game in 2 years.  Add that to his age and you get a very risky combination for any team to take on.  Will there be teams willing to take that risk? Absolutely.  But will it pay off?  That remains to be seen.

Burress brings with him the experience of having played on a winning team and a team that won the Super Bowl.  Burress caught 70 passes and 12 touchdowns in 2007 capped by his game winning catch from Eli Manning in the Super Bowl.  Burress, in 2007, had great talent, played the game well, was key to the Giants winning season and he was 4 years younger and was playing every game.  He is now 4 years older, hasn’t played a single game in 2 years, and has much more questions than answers.

It will be interesting to see what NFL teams show interest in Burress upon his release.  I am sure there will be some and I think he will probably get a job with a team, even a short term contract is possible.  What happens on the field though, that is something only time can tell.
