Bill And Chris Polian Fired By Colts

I have to admit that I did not see this coming. The Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay has fired Vice Chairman Bill Polian and Team President Chris Polian. I expected Colts head coach Jim Caldwell to be fired after a disastrous season, but he still has a job, at least for now.

The Colts under Bill Polian’s direction won at least 10 games every season but one from 1999 through 2010. That steak came to an end this season, with the season ending surgery to Peyton Manning in the off season.

Polian’s critics will say that he has lost his touch in recent years. In the Colts’ last five drafts, the best players that the Colts have drafted were running back Donald Brown, linebacker Pat Angerer, defensive back Jerraud Powers, receiver Austin Collie, and linebacker Clint Session. Not quite an all-stat group of players, but the Colts did not need that. They needed players to come in a fit around the players and system that they already had in place.

This will be an interesting offseason for the Colts. They have the first pick in the draft and are expected to take Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, thought to be the most sure-fire quarterback prospect to come out of college since Polian drafted Manning in 1998.

The problem that the news Colts GM will have to deal with is Peyton Manning. Can the Colts financially afford Manning and Luck next season, or will one of the new GM’s first decisions be to cut the future Hall of Famer Manning?
