Asante Samuel was willing to restructure his contract so that he could be dealt to the Falcons, and the Falcons gave up a mere seventh round pick for him.  However, I have to ask–isn’t this a little bit too much like Philadelphia?  I mean, they had too many people playing corner, and, now they have the same issue in Atlanta.  I know that new DC, Mike Nolan, is brilliant and all of that, but I just don’t understand how it can work any differently.  Carrying three corners that make a ton of money means you have to cut one spot from the team somewhere else.

Calvin Johnson, Megatron to those of us who listen to sports radio, has won the vote for who will appear on the cover of the new Madden Football game.  I’ve talked about this before, but, I still kinda want to see Matthew Stafford throwing him the ball in the background.  I mean, if Walt Disney could invent a specialized camera with which he shot “Snow White” in greater clarity than anyone had shot an animated movie before, then surely the graphic wizards that work for EA can figure out how to get the quarterback in the background shot so that we can see him throwing Johnson the ball.

Ever since Osi Umenyiora cracked down on the Giants and started spilling all the sordid details of their on-again/off-again contractual relationship/promises, I think it’s been one downhill climb.  I mean, downhill fast.  The Giants were probably willing to forgive and forget, but, I think the emergence Jason Pierre-Paul might have sealed the deal with the Giants.  They see Pierre-Paul as the future and Osi as the past.  So, when Osi starts saying that he probably won’t be able to get an extension done, I think that might be the biggest reason.  Someone apppeared and took his spot.

No More Pro Bowl? Darn (j/k)

by Patton on April 26, 2012

The correct terminology is, the NFL is planning on suspending the Pro Bowl.  I’m not sure if that’s anything different than not having it, but, perhaps they have greater plans than this short article can articulate.

No More Mock Drafts

by Patton on April 21, 2012

I could sit here and pretend to be a draft genius and write up a mock draft, but, I don’t know if that’s a good idea.  There’s nothing that tells me that we can figure this draft out past the first two picks.  So, instead of doing a mock draft, it might make more sense to talk about what teams need.  Not all of them, but some of them have needs that cannot be overlooked.

Madden Cover Madness

by Patton on April 20, 2012

ESPN is doing a vote for who everyone thinks should be on the cover of the new Madden NFL game.  It’s down to Cam Newton and Calvin Johnson.  I don’t know if the vote is skewed or if I’m just dreaming, but, where’s Aaron Rodgers?  Where’s Tom Brady?  Where’s Peyton Manning?  Where’s Matthew Stafford?  Where’s Matt Ryan?  Where’s Joe Flacco?  Where’s Big Ben?

That’s my question.  I have absolutely no problem with Cam Newton or Calvin Johnson, but, I don’t know if they are the hottest stars in the league.  Calvin is one of the richest, but, Cam needs another year to prove he can repeat what he did last season.

When you read a news story that says that Andrew Luck was informed that he is going to be selected first in the draft, you have to laugh, because, well, it’s not a story.  Of course he was going to be the first pick.  I have nothing against RG3, but, he wasn’t going first and he didn’t work out for the Colts.  So, duh!

When the GM comes out and says:

Wow, he’s gone?  The Razorbacks are going to let Bobby Petrino go and a press conference is apparently forthcoming to confirm that decision.  I can’t believe it.  I really thought they were going to keep him.  I really thought that there would be a more excellent way.  I also thought that they were going to choose winning at football over anything that could have gone wrong outside of the college’s campus.  Apparently, I was wrong.

Now, I think I see what the new trend is.  I mean, think about it.  The hazing scandal erupted at FAMU and the band director who had been there FOREVER, got fired.  Just like that.  Bang.  It’s over.

49ers Get Jacobs

by Patton on April 9, 2012

Brandon Jacobs is the newest running back in San Francisco, but why?

The 49ers already have Frank Gore.  Isn’t he enough for the team?  Am I missing something here?  Is a two-headed or three-headed monster better than the feature back sitting alone in the backfield?  It was, it can be, but I don’t think that the 49ers necessarily needed Brandon Jacobs.  It’s a nice signing, and it could help free up Alex Smith so that the league doesn’t figure him out quite as quickly.  I mean, that’s a help, but I just don’t think that that’s something you do because you want to.  You do it because you need it.

Bobby Petrino, one of the most hated people in Atlanta, decided that getting on a motorcycle with a young blonde he had just hired (and who we assume he was having an affair with or something) was a good idea.  It was not a good idea.  Now, I’m not going to deride him for making bad decisions.  It’s not that.  It’s just that, what does Arkansas do?

I think we have to remember that this girl’s fiance works at Arkansas, she works at Arkansas, and Petrino is the head football coach.  Do the math.  Somebody’s going to have to go.  I mean, they could easily fire this poor little girl or her fiance, or both, but, where does that leave Petrino?
