It’s one of those nasty little subjects that just keep coming back, like a bad penny. This time the subject is the 18-game NFL season and the bad penny is Commissioner Roger Goodell.
Goodell is making the rounds of the NFL teams again, rousing the possibility of an 18-game season. The players almost unanimously turned it down during the lockout last year, but Goodell has never been one to take no for an answer.
So here he is again, earlier this week, on ESPN radio 1050 am bringing up the subject.

For the first time in years, the Pittsburgh Steelers are at a crossroads in the off season. Over the salary cap, the Steelers must not only try and renegotiate several contracts, but make decisions on what players, if any, they take a chance on losing.
The prime threat of leaving the Pittsburgh organization could be wide receiver Mike Wallace. Wallace is one of the premier pass catchers in the NFL, but his contract is up, making him a restricted free agent. That means any team that wants to sign Wallace would have to give a first round pick to the Steelers in order to do so.

Is quarterback the position the Cleveland Browns should go after this off season? If you listen to the media and some fans, quarterback is the spot where this team falls short. Colt McCoy spent this season as the starter and struggled most of the year. Whether it was McCoy or the offensive system installed on the fly by Coach Pat Shurmur, quarterback was a problem. But not as much as the positions of Wide Receiver, Linebacker, defensive back and offensive line.

Speculation continues to run amuck around the corners of the NFL on where Peyton Manning will end up next year. Never has the NFL seen this kind of frenzy over a single player.

Could the NCAA be close to a playoff system for college football?
Believe it or not it appears that might just be the case. The BCS is looking at all scenarios and the 4 team playoffs system seems to be getting the most talk. This would mean the top 4 teams in the country, this year that would have meant LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma State would have been in the playoff. There would have been a fight between Oregon and Stanford for the final spot.

So Bret Bielma is upset at Ohio State coach Urban Meyer for allegedly “cheating” while recruiting. Bielema has a very picky definition of cheating.
According to Bielema, Meyer violated an unwritten rule in the Big Ten whereby coaches stop recruiting players if they commit to other conference schools. He called it a “gentleman’s agreement.” Mark Dantonio says he had a similar agreement with former OSU coach Jim Tressel. Bielema was so upset about Meyer’s actions he contacted Big Ten commissioner Jim Delaney. Dantonio believes Meyer’s actions are “unethical.”

Not very often does a writer get to include two passions into their work. Writers need to be passionate about their labor. Most of the time those passions do not cross over. However when they do, there is a chance to satisfy both. This is one of those times.
Protests are expected this Sunday at the Super Bowl in Indianapolis. These protests are targeting Governor Mitch Daniels and his signature on a new bill making Indiana a Right to work state. Thousands of union members gathered inside the Statehouse chanted “Shame on you!” and “See you at the Super Bowl!” as the vote was announced.

After spending most of the season on the injured reserve list, Cleveland Browns running back Peyton Hillis may be back on the team’s radar. But are the Browns on his list?
After a superb 2010 season and gaining the cover of the “Madden” game, 2011 was anything but. In fact Hillis began believing in the “Madden” curse after this past season.
From the second game of the season against Miami, Hillis came down with a “suspicious” sore throat. Later in the year Hillis disclosed he didn’t play on the advice of his agent. When he returned he sustained a hamstring injury that he seemed to nurse, and his teammates lost respect in his ability to play in pain.

Football is over for the Cleveland Browns, yet the slamming of the front office continues around the city. Now Mike Holmgren is being criticized by a former player.
Heath Evans made comments on the NFL Network about the Browns and their President in December. About the same time Evans went on 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland and again took the opportunity to portray Holmgren as anything but the answer for the Browns. For some reason, the comments are just now hitting the press in Northeast Ohio.
