And The Heisman Goes To…

by Patton on December 12, 2009

Mark Ingram!  After a very painful 50 minutes of 4-letter network production where they constantly highlighted their opinion (not mine) that the Heisman is a career-award the 2009 Heisman Trophy went to a sophomore running back.

Ingram did not lead the nation in anything, but his team is one step away from a National Championship and that team (Bama) comes form the toughest conference in football.

He had to run past the biggest, meanest, nastiest defenses in the country and when it mattered most he ran 60-something yards to put away Florida in a game that tested his team’s resolve.  How in the world can you vote against someone who did all of that and vote instead for:

Colt McCoy – Who doesn’t even know all the rules and ran out the clock against Nebraska (stupidly) and was gifted that one second by the NCAA so they wouldn’t have to put TCU or Cincinnati in the BCS Title Game.

Tim Tebow – Who got his head knocked off and hasn’t been the same since.

Ndamukong Suh – Who is a defensive player and had no shot so the vote would have been worthless.

and

Toby Gerhart – Who plays for Stanford against weaklings in the Pac-10.

Possibly the best part of the night was watching Ingram accept the award.  He couldn’t hold himself together long enough to speak.  Think about it.  Of all the great players who have played in Bryant-Denney he’s the first to win the Heisman Trophy.  We could sit here and name them, but until today Stanford had more Heisman Winners (Jim Plunkett) than Alabama.  What a freaking tragedy that was.

Now that he is the newly minted Heisman winner we only have two questions to ask ourselves:

1.  How badly is Bama going to kill Texas?  (Because if this kid reacts like this to winning an award how is he going to react when a Title is on the line?)

2.  Is he going to play his Junior and Senior year or is he gone?  If I were him I’d go (because your life as a back is short and his big-wide head is perfect for breaking down NFL defenses…but that’s just me.)

Either way…I’m happy for him.  (And I picked it right baby!)
