An Average Offseason Could Equal A Winning Season For The Browns

Small moves in free agency, and build through the draft.  That seems to be the way the Cleveland Browns under Pat Shurmur and Mike Holmgren and going to be built.  Popular?  Not to most fans who watch as players such as Mike Wallace are dangled in front of them.  Fans watched the kickoff of Free Agent Frenzy with many hopes and dreams of signing big names.  That just hasn’t happened.

What has happened is the Browns are building.  The team is becoming solidified in some areas and distractions in locker rooms have not been resigned.  From this fan’s point of view I have to say if anything we lost 1 main player (Mike Adams to Denver).  Peyton Hillis is a great running back, when he’s not upset or “injured”.  The sad truth is he became a distraction in the locker room and on the sideline.  Would I have love to see him resign and do his own version of “Beast Mode” again?  Of course.  We all would.  However, that didn’t happen and now it is time to move on.

Yes, the Browns have released some key pieces.  Mainly, Eric Steinbach, and Jayme Mitchell.  However, I really feel these two players could both be resigned.

So what do we have to look forward to with the Browns?  For one … a QB in the same system two years in a row!  This is big!  Since the Browns were reborn back in 99 the only constant QB we had for more than one year was Tim Couch.  I think McCoy can be the guy and let’s be honest.  He’s going to have this season to prove it.

The resigning of Alex Smith (TE) was bigger then I think most people understand.  At 6′ 4” he’s a big target and with this West Coast Offense he makes a great target inside the RedZone.  Mohamed Massaqui has been working this offseason with Chris Carter on route running.  I think he understands Greg Little can be a true #2 and he will be slotted at the #3.  However, the players on this team are just that … players on a team.  Working to get better.  They can accept what roles they are given if it’s better for the team.  Again, this is the second year for Colt and the rest of the team under this offense and it’s going to be a great one.
