Mark Herzlich has already been in the toughest battle of his life and it wasn’t on the football field. It was for his very life. Herzlich battled Ewing’s Sarcoma and now he intends to take on the NFL.
After a somewhat disappointing performance at the Senior Bowl, Herzlich is participating in the NFL Combine. He has so far performed very well including being one of the top performers in the Bench Press completing 29 reps. Herzlich has been battling his way back to the NFL from having a Titanium rod inserted into his leg to help speed his recovery. He has come through 7 months of chemotherapy and another 5 weeks of radiation therapy. He was told he had a 70% chance of survival and an absolute ZERO percent chance of playing football ever again. And yet, here he is, at the 2011 NFL Combine battling yet again.
Herzlich has things NFL teams look for the physical tools, work ethic, character and toughness. But he also has on the field advantages as well. He is a complete player against the run. Takes on and gets off blockers quickly and chases down plays all over the field. He is a highly-productive player who has a terrific blend of height, bulk and top-end speed. Plays with good awareness and discipline and doesn’t stay blocked long.
Most observers don’t look for him to last much past the first few rounds and he will get his NFL shot. After his long battle with cancer, he deserves that shot. But more than that, as long as he stays healthy, he will be a great addition for some NFL team. Here’s hoping he does.
